Utah mother of 4 stranded in Mexico after having heart attack

SALT LAKE CITY — (KUTV) Ambur Meyers was on a trip in Cancun, Mexico, with her husband when she experienced what she thought was a panic attack – it turned out to be something much worse.

Doctors told her she had suffered a mild heart attack at the age of 35. The couple from Riverton had no choice but to have an emergency surgery in Mexico. The only problem was the couple, who was there on a trip paid for by her husband’s employer, needed to come up with $10,000 on the spot to get her in surgery and immediately put a number of stents in her veins to fix the problem. A generous friend paid the down payment.

One woman from Los Angeles, who didn’t even know the Myers, donated to their cause after meeting Ambur’s mother on a flight.

Friends created a GoFundMe page to help raise money for Ambur and Rick Meyers. The couple do not have health insurance coverage.

There is also an account set up at America First Credit Union. You can go to any branch and donate. The fund is called “Ambur Meyers Charitable Fund.”

Since surgery began though, doctors have realized Ambur will need at least three stents, instead of just one like they originally thought, and the veins still need to recover. Flying home back to the states was not an immediate option either because Ambur’s condition had worsened and she wouldn’t be able to fly. For now the Meyers hope things will go well, and she will recover and they will be able to pay all the expenses so they can get back home to their four children.

The estimated cost is now at more than $70,000 so far. The Ambur won’t be released from the hospital until all of the medical expenses are paid in full, according to the GoFundMe page.

As of Friday night, the GoFundMe page had raised nearly $73,000.

The fundraising website page also states the couple is expecting a three- to four-day hospital stay, but that could end up extending to a week or longer depending on her condition and whether the bill is paid in full.

An update from the page Saturday night quoted Rick:

I just got out of seeing her. I was able to feed her dinner. She had a fantastic day. Her blood pressure is almost back to normal. She is the most alert she’s been since Monday night. We are hoping she can be moved out of ICU tomorrow. Her hospital stay won’t be any shorter, but things are looking up! Thank you, everyone!!!
