East Idaho Eats: Mitchell’s serves hearty breakfasts

IDAHO FALLS — People may think Mitchell’s Restaurant is only a truck stop because of where it’s located, but truckers are only part of the many who frequent the eatery.

“The truck business is extra for me,” owner Mitchell Hall said. “My main business is local people coming here twice a day, sitting in the same spot, ordering the same food.”

Mitchell’s has been serving the community for 23 years. Before opening the restaurant, Hall worked 16 years at a local JB’s Big Boys restaurant prior to it being shut down.

“I started as a dish washer and worked my way to general manager,” Hall said. “I was looking for another job and this opportunity came up so I bought this place and it’s been great ever since.”

Customers agree the restaurant specializes in hearty, home-style breakfast food. Mitchell’s isn’t skimpy with portion sizes either.

With gigantic biscuits and oversized ham slices, customers leave well fed. Not to mention all of the food is fresh and made from scratch.

“We like the biscuits and gravy, we like the bacon and my kids go crazy over the pancakes,” customer Jessica Sterling said.

Hall said he sees some of the same customers ordering off of the breakfast menu two or three times a day.

“Breakfast is our biggest seller, we sell breakfast all day, and that’s what we sell the most of,” Hall said. “At Lunch and dinner time people are still ordering chicken friend steak.”

Hall said he tries to keep the feel of the restaurant comfortable and homey. He said Mitchell’s isn’t fancy or frilly, but it’s a place were locals can come to socialize and enjoy a hearty meal.

“If you’re looking for a good meal at a good price, I think we would fit,” Hall said.
