IDAHO FALLS — New information released by Idaho Falls police Tuesday shows David Alma “Al” Giles of St. Anthony died while struggling to get a shotgun from a deputy’s patrol vehicle.

Police reports show that early Friday, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy, who has not been identified, responded to a 911 call regarding a medical issue along U.S. Highway 20. He found Giles, 60, and transported him in a patrol vehicle to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

The deputy arrived at the roadway entrance to an EIRMC parking lot with Giles just before 7 a.m.

An altercation occurred at which time Giles grabbed the shotgun from the deputy’s patrol vehicle, resulting in the deputy and Giles struggling over the gun, police spokeswoman Joelyn Hansen said in a news release.

The gun was fired once, killing Giles.

An Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force investigation into the death of Giles is tentatively scheduled to be complete early next week. Idaho State Police, with the assistance of the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office, is leading the investigation. Following the investigation, all information will be turned over to the Bonneville County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

EastIdahoNews.com reached out to several of Giles’ family members. They declined to comment, at the behest of local authorities, until the investigation is complete.

An autopsy of Giles was completed in Boise on Monday. The results, including a toxicology report, are pending with no set time of when those results will be available, according to the news release.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy is currently on paid administrative leave as is standard protocol.
