IDAHO FALLS – Police are investigating the shooting death of a man near an Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center parking lot on Friday.

Police reports show a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a 911 call regarding a medical issue along U.S. Highway 20 early Friday morning, according to a news release.

The deputy transported David Alma Giles, 60, of St. Anthony to EIRMC.

“At 6:55 a.m. the deputy arrived with Giles at the EIRMC parking lot when an altercation occurred that resulted in the death of Giles,” police spokeswoman Joelyn Hansen said in a news release.

Police did not disclose who the altercation was with or why it occurred.

EIRMC representatives confirmed the incident happened on a roadway entrance into one of its parking lots. But otherwise, officials say the incident did not impact the operation of the hospital.

“This is not our story to tell — this is under the jurisdiction of the IFPD,” said Coleen Niemann, Director of Marketing and Community Relations at EIRMC.

“… We took the patient here and cared for him, but the operations in the ER were never disrupted,” she said.

We are looking into this story and will post more information as it becomes available.
