RIGBY — EastIdahoNews.com was proud to sponsor town hall political meetings in Jefferson County this week. Nearly 100 people gathered in the Harwood Elementary School gym on Wednesday and Thursday night as we spoke with candidates running for county commission, prosecutor, and fire commission.

We also interviewed the sheriff, who is running unopposed, and District 2 County Commissioner Scott Hancock, who is also running unopposed.

The town halls were part of a series of forums featuring candidates running for political office in East Idaho. The Idaho primary will be held May 17.

Four candidates are running for Jefferson County Commissioner in District 3.

They include:

  • Ken Hall
  • Fred Martinez
  • Richard Savage
  • Roger Young

The candidates agreed to sit down with EastIdahoNews.com reporter Nate Eaton. They were given 60 seconds for an opening and closing statement. They also answered questions from the audience and the following questions posed by EastIdahoNews.com:

  1. What is your top priority should you be elected to the county commission?
  2. District 3 is the largest commission district in Jefferson County. What will you do to make those living in your district feel more represented?
  3. We hear a lot about a lack of transparency with politicians. Are the current commissioners completely transparent and how do you plan to be transparent with residents?
  4. How many of you have attended a county commissioner meeting? Not a lot of people attend the meetings unless there’s a controversial issue being discussed. How will you get more folks actively involved in local government?
  5. Many county employees feel a disconnect between them and the commissioners. What is your plan to make them feel like their voices are valuable and improve morale?
