IDAHO FALLS — An Idaho Falls woman has pleaded guilty to using her child’s Social Security number to try to get a loan.

Christina Smith, 30, was in court in Bonneville County on Tuesday for a change of plea hearing.

Bonneville County Prosecutor Danny Clark and defense attorney Jordan S. Crane came to a resolution in Smith’s case via a plea agreement.

As part of the non-binding plea agreement, Smith agreed to pay restitution in another forgery case that is under investigation by police and the prosecution agreed not to file additional charges against her.

“Can you tell me what makes you guilty of this crime?” District Judge Bruce Pickett asked Smith during the hearing.

“I used my son’s Social Security number to try and get a loan,” she replied. “I used my name with his Social Security number.”

Smith previously reached out to EastIdahoNews.com in response to our original article and disputed the police’s version of the case.

Idaho Falls police arrested Christina Smith on a warrant for felony attempted forgery March 9. Police spokeswoman Joelyn Hansen said the payday loan in question was for $500.

Loan officers discovered the fraud and contacted police.

Smith is due back in court on June 1 for sentencing. She faces a potential jail sentence with a minimum of one year and a maximum of seven years. She also faces a fine of up to $25,000 that includes restitution.
