IDAHO FALLS — The investigation into the shooting death of a man near an Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center parking lot has been turned over to the Bonneville County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police reports show David “Al” Giles, 60, of St. Anthony died March 18 while struggling to get a shotgun from a Jefferson County Sheriff deputy.

The deputy, who has not been identified, responded to a 911 call regarding a medical issue along U.S. Highway 20. He found Giles and transported him in a patrol vehicle to EIRMC. The altercation occurred near an entrance to the parking lot.

The gun was fired once, killing Giles. Investigators have not said who fired the weapon.

An Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force investigation was turned over to Bonneville County Prosecutor Daniel Clark late last week.

“I’ll now review the case to determine whether criminal charges are warranted,” Clark told EastIdahoNews.com Tuesday morning.

Clark will analyze evidence in the shooting, including EIRMC surveillance video. He expects to release his findings later this week.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy is currently on paid administrative leave as is standard protocol.
