ARCO — A deadly crash held up traffic on U.S. Highway 93, near Craters of the Moon, for about an hour Sunday night.

Two vehicles traveling on the highway collided near milepost 232 around 6:43 p.m., Butte County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Dave Hansen said.

Witnesses observed one mangled car on the side of the highway and another about 30 yards off the road among the lava rock.

The man whose car went off the road was transported by air ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls where he was pronounced dead. The identity of the man, who was in his 60s, has not been released as the investigation is ongoing, Hansen told EastIdahoNews.com.

The driver of the second vehicle received minor injuries.

Hansen said speed was a factor in the crash. Both individuals appeared to be wearing seat belts, he said.

The sheriff’s office, along with Idaho State Police, Arco Fire, Lost River Fire and Life Flight all responded to the crash.

“Traffic was stopped for nearly an hour to provide a safe landing area for the Life Flight helicopter,” Hansen said.

The crash is being investigated by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office with the assistance of ISP.
