MORELAND — An Idaho Falls man killed in a crash Thursday morning was in a stolen truck and had stolen two other vehicles in the hours before the wreck, according to investigators.

James L. Barry, 33, was driving westbound on the U.S. Highway 26 in a 2007 Dodge R1500 pickup around 8 a.m. when Idaho State Police said he drove off the road, overcorrected and rolled onto the shoulder near milepost 297.

Bingham County Sheriff Craig Rowland told EastIdahoNews.com the pickup Barry was driving had been stolen from a home north of Blackfoot. Barry also stole two other trucks within a mile of where the Dodge was stolen, Rowland said.

The three vehicle thefts are being investigated by the sheriff’s office while Idaho State Police are looking into the crash.

Rowland said all three thefts happened within a few hours and investigators have no apparent motive.

Barry allegedly stole a Ford pickup with a trailer hooked to it on the 300 block of 200 West in Blackfoot. The vehicle was abandoned near 400 North in Blackfoot.

Rowland said Barry then jumped into a 2006 Ford pickup on the 200 block of 400 North in Blackfoot. That vehicle became stuck in a sand pit on the property, so Barry left the area, according to Rowland.

Barry then stole a 2007 Dodge pickup which was parked nearby, Rowland said.

A short time later, Barry crashed the truck on Highway 26.

ISP said Barry was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported by ground ambulance to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello, where he died.
