Power restored after lightning strike affects 1,700 customers

Rocky Mountain Power officials confirmed power had been restored shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday.

ORIGINAL STORY

IDAHO FALLS– Lighting struck a power pole in Bonneville County Sunday afternoon and caused hundreds of residents to lose power.

Rocky Mountain Power officials tell EastIdahoNews.com that more than 1,700 customers are currently without power due to a lighting strike on a power pole near the 5000 block of North 15th East. Most of the customers are on the north side of Idaho Falls.

Witnesses at the scene of the lightning strike say a power line was arcing on the ground and caused a brief fire.

Bonneville County Fire Department responded along with the Bonneville Country Sheriff’s Office just prior to 5 p.m. Rocky Mountain Power crews were on scene within minutes and have begone to work on the issue.

There is no estimated time on when power will be restored, but officials with Rocky Mountain Power are hoping with the next couple of hours.
