IDAHO FALLS — The four-year-old child who was trapped under a boat last week in the Snake River for over 15 minutes has been released from the hospital.

“It is an absolute miracle that he survived,” Angel Terry, the boy’s grandmother, tells EastIdahoNews.com. “The first responders were concerned he wasn’t going to make it.”

Jacob Davey was released to his family Sunday, May 29 – five days after he was admitted to Eastern Idaho Reginal Medical Center.

Jacob was rushed to the hospital the evening of Tuesday, May 24 after being trapped under a boat for at least 15 minutes.

The child was in critical condition and had severe hypothermia, according to Idaho Falls Fire Department Battalion Chief Lance Johnson. He was unresponsive and EMS workers immediately began chest compressions.

Once at the hospital, Terry says Jacob was put on a ventilator and kept sedated while doctors tried to slowly raise his body temperature. Once his heart rate became stable, concerns of brain damage became a factor as Jacob’s lungs were full of river water which contains dangerous bacteria that could lead to infection.

“We are very grateful to all of the first responders and the doctors,” Terry says.

Terry says Jacob continues to gain more strength by the day and he is talking, playing and even smiling.

Others involved in the accident last week were treated and released from the hospital.

Jacob’s family have set up a GoFundMe to help cover the cost of medical expenses. His parents have taken time away from work to be with him as he heals.
