Bonneville County clerk to step down in July

IDAHO FALLS — The Bonneville County clerk announced his resignation Thursday.

“This county has been my home for the last 41 years,” Ronald Longmore told a crowd of about 20 people at the Bonneville County Courthouse. “I have served longer than any other elected official in the state.”

Longmore started his career in 1975 as deputy clerk. He was appointed as county clerk by commissioners in 1979 after the then-clerk, Del Roy Bodily, died.

“We had typewriters and adding machines back then,” Longmore told EastIdahoNews.com. “Nothing like these PCs and smartphones that everyone has now.”

Longmore has been elected as clerk 10 times.

He said he is leaving the position because he and his wife plan to move to Utah to live near his children.

Longmore’s resignation will be effective July 31.

What happens next

Idaho law states that the county central committee of the same political party of the former elected official will submit a list of three nominations to the board of county commissioners within 15 days from the day the office is vacated.

The county commissioners will fill the vacancy by appointment from the submitted list within 15 days.

If no appointment is made within 15 days, the county central committee of the political party submitting the nominations will designate one of the three nominees to fill the vacancy.

Those nominated have to meet the same requirements as those elected to the office, according to Idaho law.

Those requirements are that the person must be at least 21 years old, is a U.S. citizen and has resided in the county at least one year.

Bonneville County Republican Central Committee Chairman Doyle Beck tells EastIdahoNews.com that there is an application process and those who are interested in the position should contact him through his email at dhbeck@gmail.com.
