Charge reduced in ‘crime against nature’ case

IDAHO FALLS — A felony crime against nature charge against an Idaho Falls man has been reduced to misdemeanor battery.

Juan Carlos Gonzalez, 28, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge Tuesday, May 10, in Bonneville County.

Prior to the guilty plea, the state motioned to amend the criminal complaint to misdemeanor battery.

“Some additional information came forward that negated the level of criminal intent as it was charged,” Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney John Dewey told EastIdahoNews.com on Thursday.

Dewey declined to give further information.

Gonzalez was sentenced to 90 days in jail with 89 days suspended, with credit for one day served. Gonzalez will serve one year of supervised probation and pay $457.50 in fines and fees.

Authorities arrested Gonzalez in January for felony crime against nature, following an alleged sexual assault that was reported days earlier. Police originally said Gonzalez sexually assaulted a 31-year-old male in the early morning hours of Jan. 12.
