Fire burns house near Irving Middle School in Pocatello

  Published at

POCATELLO — A fire of suspicious origin engulfed a house at 934 N. Grant Ave. in Pocatello early Saturday, according to Shane Grow, battalion chief for the Pocatello Fire Department.

The house, which is near Irving Middle School, has long been abandoned and the gas and power have been disconnected, leaving few ways for a fire to start, Grow said.

A fire investigator was on the scene in the early morning hours and a police department investigator was also expected, according to Grow.

But neighbors say it’s a relatively active area with people generally out and about. So no one immediately remembers seeing anything unusual, he said.

The fire department responded with four units. But the structure was already engulfed in flames when they arrived.

A ladder truck extended it’s ladder, but it was used to provide light rather than water.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control in 20 minutes to half an hour. No other nearby homes or stuctures were damaged, Grow said.

Firefighters determined that no one was in the home that started on fire and no one was hurt, he said.

The fire department planned to have a presence on the scene until all investigators had arrived.
