A Shelley man was booked into the Bonneville County Jail just after 2 p.m. Friday, May 13, after police say he barricaded himself in a cabin near Swan Valley.

Michael Jaymes Chandler, 24, was booked on a probation violation along with two additional misdemeanor charges related to the confrontation with police.

The incident began around 9:45 a.m. when deputies located a vehicle in the area of South Fork Lodge in Swan Valley that was associated with a Michael J. Chandler, 24 of Shelley, the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Deputies were looking for Chandler after he was reported by family as being suicidal and in the Swan Valley area.

Deputies discovered a nearby cabin that had been entered by force and surrounded it until more officers from the sheriff’s office and the Idaho State Police could arrive and assist.

After some time Chandler communicated with officers. They forced their way into the cabin because he couldn’t get the door open on his own, Sheriff Paul Wilde told EastIdahoNews.com. Police took him into custody peacefully.

Chandler was intoxicated and was found to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest for probation violation, the sheriff’s office said.

It appears at this time that Chandler did not know the owners of the cabin and was not associated with it in any way, according to the news release.

Chandler was transported to the Bonneville County Jail where he was booked on the warrant as well as misdemeanor unlawful entry and malicious injury to property.

His bond totals S10,600.

Earlier story:

BONNEVILLE COUNTY — A man who barricaded himself in a cabin outside of Swan Valley has peacefully surrendered.

Sheriff’s deputies and Idaho State Police had surrounded the cabin on Conant Valley Loop with their rifles drawn the morning of Friday, May 13. The man is now in police custody.

Sheriff Paul Wilde said the suspect is a young man from Idaho Falls who was having a bad day.

The cabin did not belong to him, Wilde said.

The sheriff said after some time he started to talk to deputies and said he was willing to surrender. However, the suspect could not get the door open on his own, Wilde said. Deputies forced the door open.

“The young man had a misdemeanor warrant out of Bonneville County. He’ll be arrested for that,” Wilde said, adding there may be further charges related to today’s incident.

As of 12:45 p.m., he was being checked by paramedics and then will be transported to the county jail.

The sheriff’s office said it would release more details later Friday.
