DASH CAM VIDEO: Rexburg officer cleared in police-involved car crash

REXBURG – The Madison County Prosecutor’s Office has cleared a Rexburg police officer involved in a February car crash.

Reserve officer Dale Wright was responding to a fire call on Feb. 27 when he was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of University Boulevard and South Highway 191.

Wright went through a red light with emergency lights flashing when he was T-boned by another driver.

Dash camera video obtained by EastIdahoNews.com shows Wright was driving at a slow rate of speed when he entered the clear intersection headed east and was hit by a driver traveling south.

“The other vehicle entered the intersection and the driver may have had some vision obstructions from other vehicles stopped,” Rexburg Police Captain Randy Lewis said.

Wright and the driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries. The police car was totaled.

Accident reconstruction was performed by Idaho State Police officers and the investigation was turned over to the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors determined Wright did not violate any laws during the incident. Idaho Code 49-623 allows for officers to “proceed past a red or stop signal or stop sign,” when responding to emergencies. The law includes a caveat that when responding, officers should employ an “audible signal … or visible flashing light.”

The driver of the other vehicle was not cited.

Wright has returned to work on the police force and the case is considered closed.
