East Idaho Eats: Winning hearts with strawberry jam at The Grille

  Published at  | Updated at

AMMON — The Grille in Ammon specializes in hearty homemade breakfasts and lunch.

Customers are drawn frequently here by breakfast favorites and the eatery’s signature strawberry jam. Employees say some customers enjoy the jam so much they eat it with a spoon.

“We have delicious omelets, we do a lot of omelets, lots of French toast,” server Katrina Bottcher says.

The restaurant is run by mother and son duo, Pam and Doug Ferguson. Since opening up shop last April they’ve been working hard to become a local favorite.

“People just come back. We love having them come back,” Bottcher says.

Every dish in the shop is made from scratch, but co-owner Pam Ferguson’s strawberry jam recipe is what customers crave.

“Everybody comes for the jam,” Bottcher says.

Servers say the strawberry jam goes with just about every breakfast order at the restaurant.

“Their biscuits, or their French toast, or the pancakes, some of them put it on their pancakes,” server Barbara Littleford says.

She says even though she helps cook meals, she still doesn’t know the secret to the strawberry jam.

“I don’t know what’s in it, but everybody says she should start selling it because it’s so good,” Littleford says.

Even though The Grille’s breakfasts and lunches are the most popular orders, the restaurant is open for dinner Friday nights. On Fridays The Grille serves a prime rib special.

“The Prime Rib Dinner takes a whole plate just for the meat, and another plate for the side dish. It’s so good and juicy,” Littleford says.

Customers say when the come to The Grille they know they never leave feeling empty.

“Homemade and lots of it, you never go hungry,” customer Teresa Hodges says.

And, the servers don’t disagree.

“Good reasonable price for the amount of food you get you don’t go away hungry that’s for sure,” Littleford says.
