SEATTLE — EastIdahoNews.com was honored with three awards at the Society of Professional Journalists Region 10 gala Saturday night.

Winners of the annual Northwest Excellence in Journalism contest were announced at the banquet comprised of journalists from Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon.

EastIdahoNews.com news director/reporter Nate Eaton finished first place in the “Best Online News Video Story” category for his report titled “Sgt. Marge is in Charge.” The story is about a 90-year-old female World War II veteran living in Idaho Falls and Eaton produced, shot, edited and reported the story.

Eaton also finished third place in the same category for “Kayden’s Courage.” The report tells the story and recovery of 5-year-old Kayden Emery – a local boy who was accidentally run over by a lawnmower last summer.

Eaton and managing editor Nate Sunderland were honored with a third place award in the “Spot News Reporting” category for their “Police Chase Ends at EastIdahoNews.com” report.

“It’s nice to be honored for telling the stories of east Idaho,” Eaton says. “Our goal every day is to report the news that matters to our viewers and these awards are icing on the cake.”

The Post Register also took home three awards from the contest – placing in the “Crime and Justice Reporting,” “Environment, Nature & Science Reporting” and the “Social Issues Reporting” categories.
