Police issue warning about dangerous synthetic drug

  Published at

The Pocatello Police Department issued the following alert Thursday morning.

POCATELLO — A synthetic opioid, linked to serious health issues, is present in southeastern Idaho. The drug, known as U-47700, is currently not a controlled substance and is readily available on-line.

U-47700 is an especially strong synthetic opioid. It poses a high risk for potential overdose and respiratory depression. The drug has been linked to deaths in Europe and the US especially, when used with fentanyl. At least three other states – Ohio, Wyoming and Georgia – already have taken action to ban U-47700 after it was connected to overdoses.

Community members are encouraged to research the dangers of this drug and to educate their friends and family on the dangers of U-47700.

“We want the public to be aware of the dangers of this drug. We don’t want people, especially youth, to mistakenly believe this drug is safe since it isn’t yet illegal in Idaho,” states Pocatello Police Sgt. Diekemper. “This is a very dangerous drug.”

Any information pertaining to this drug can be forwarded to the Pocatello Police Department Detectives Division at 234-6121.
