5k run schedule to help raise money for local shelters

IDAHO FALLS — A 5k event will take place next week to help raise money to help homeless people with substance abuse disorders.

Participants in Race Against Relapse can run, walk or bike. There will also be a 1K for children up to 6 years old and a 2K for children 10 and under.

The race takes place on the morning of Saturday, June 25. It will start on the Idaho Falls greenbelt across from the Bonneville County Courthouse.

Organizers ask that participants register prior to the even and to show up at 7:30 a.m. Participants may also register the morning of the event. Registration is $15 per person.

Prizes for the age groups will be awarded along with a raffle for all those who participate in the run. The event will also feature four bands: Hot Pursuit, Modern Methods, Berlin Breaks and South of Sculptor.

The money raised will go to various Idaho Falls shelters.

“Our future goal is to do these kinds of events to help raise money for those who want treatment but don’t qualify for (certain state funding drug treatment),” event organizer Stephen Stewart, tells EastIdahoNews.com.

Stewart, who works with the Idaho Department of Correction, sees people who struggle with substance abuse daily. He said treatment for some can be a literal life saver.

“When an individual doesn’t qualify for state funding, it limits our resources,” Stewart said.

For those who would like to donate to the cause can do so through a GoFundMe account.
