Sentence for man accused of kidnapping rescheduled again

IDAHO FALLS — Sentencing for an Idaho Falls man who was accused of kidnapping was rescheduled Wednesday afternoon.

This is the second rescheduling for Devin Crawford, 24, who pleaded guilty to felony second degree kidnapping and felony use of a deadly weapon charges in January.

District Judge Bruce Pickett allowed the rescheduling after the prosecution filed a motion for use of a change-of-circumstances. The prosecution decided to enact a changes of circumstances clause due to the additional crimes Crawford committed in jail. The change of circumstances clause could allow prosecution to change the original suggested sentence.

“The change of circumstances clause is in the plea agreement. What (Crawford) had done with committing new crimes has triggered that clause,” Chief Prosecuting Attorney John Dewey said.

In the original plea agreement the state had called for a fixed period of 10 years with an unset indeterminate period. In the change of circumstances clause the state is now suggesting 15 years with a possibility of two years additional years.

Crawford’s first sentencing was scheduled in March but postponed because of an altercation with a co-defendant in jail. Crawford attacked Ivan Sandoval, 20, in jail with a blunt object, and was charged with felony intimidating a witness and possession of contraband in a correctional facility.

Prosecutors said as a result of the violent attack Crawford is facing additional charges and was in breach of his original plea agreement.

Crawford was originally charged after he was accused of aiding in the kidnapping and attack of Brandon Bykonen in August 2015. He allegedly taunted Bykonen with a hatchet before attacking him, resulting in loss of several of Bykonen’s fingers.

Crawford’s sentencing is set for July 13.
