Internally decapitated boy gets neck brace off

BOISE (KBOI) — An internally decapitated Nevada boy is getting out of his brace Monday night, just weeks after a car crash in Idaho that changed his life.

Wishes were answered for the 4-year-old and his mother as the doctor told them he’s on the road to a quick recovery.

“It looks perfect,” said Brandy Gonzalez, Killian’s mother. “They said it looks just like a normal kid and he doesn’t need the collar anymore other than for comfort.”

Killian was internally decapitated in the crash, meaning his brain was essentially hanging on by a thread, that thread being the spinal cord.

His doctor told his parents today that he’s about 50 percent recovered and should expect full recovery in six to eight months. This recovery is all without surgery.

The crash left Killian cross-eyed, but his mother said his eyes should be back to normal after three months. As a reference point, she says he couldn’t move them past the middle after the crash. They’ve already improved dramatically and he’s now able to move them left and right.

“I think God has bigger plans for him because this is the second time he’s almost died and here he is, just a normal 4-year-old boy,” Gonzalez said.

The family says a concept of a normal life is much closer in reach today than it was 12 weeks ago when this all happened.

The pair will head back to their home state of Montana Tuesday so Brandy can start physical therapy. She broke nearly every limb in her body in the crash and is still in a wheel chair.
