6 homemade recipes to get rid of acne that people swear by

Zits have a funny way of popping up in the most obvious spot on exactly the worst day. Things only get worse when you realize that what you thought would only be a teenage trial has stretched long into your adult years. However, there is some good news: these are some natural acne solutions that have a cult following.

Oil Cleansing method

This method of cleaning your face with oil has become very popular in the past few years. The idea behind it is that water won’t wash oil off your face, but the right type of oil will.

There are a lot of directions online on how to get started, but this video by Cammie Scott is one of the most popular explanations.

Tumeric

Tumeric is a spice often used in Indian food that can be made into a paste when added to honey. Spread this paste over your face for an acne cleansing mask.

One of the most promising reviews from Emily on Acne.org: “This mask leaves you with clear, clean and soft skin. It rejuvenates and restores your skin. Probably the best remedy for your skin, plus, it is all natural! My acne scars began to disappear after around a month of usage!”

Studies show that turmeric can reduce inflammation and is anti-bacterial, but these studies have been performed in test tube stage only – not with human studies. It also can possibly leave your skin temporarily yellow. So, proceed with caution.

Double cleansing

Double cleansing involves using the oil cleansing method mentioned above, but then giving it an additional wash with a gentle water-based cleanser.

The most promising review is from beauty blogger, Sarah Beyl on Confessions of a Product Junkie: “[It] has improved the texture of my skin enormously. It has helped get rid of blackheads on my nose. It has significantly reduced my breakouts. And it’s a genuinely enjoyable part of my skincare regimen.”

Change your pillowcase every day

Your face spends several hours every night smashed against something that is potentially holding loads of bacteria.

One extremely happy Reddit user who battled three years of horrible acne started placing a clean towel over his pillow every night, instead of being fine with changing his pillowcase once every two weeks. In one week, his face cleared up.

Many others have found this advice helpful as it has helped clear up their acne.

Spearmint herbal tea

Spearmint has antioxidant and antifungal properties, according to Progressive Health.

The most promising review is from this pleased Reddit user: “I have hormonal acne … I tend to break out along my jaw and on my chin, and then it leaves a bunch of red marks that last for months and months. [My PocketDerm lady] suggested I try spearmint tea. It’s supposed to help with balancing the hormones.

I’ve drank a cup of Alvita Organic Spearmint Tea every night for the past 2-3 months (I’ve missed a few nights). I’ve already gone through a couple hormonal cycles where I would expect to break out, but I haven’t!! It’s really quite amazing to me.”

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is the holy grail of household beauty products. It’s used for anything from shaving cream to a deep hair mask. And pretty much any natural beauty blogger can tell you about it’s great benefits as a moisturizer. As it turns out, coconut oil is also helpful in treating acne.
