City of Idaho Falls warns of utilities scam

The following is a news release from the city of Idaho Falls.

IDAHO FALLS — The City of Idaho Falls has again received reports of a scam targeting Idaho Falls residents.

In an incident reported this week, an Idaho Falls man received a call from someone posing as a City Utilities representative threatening to disconnect electric service to the man’s home if he didn’t pay his utility bill over the phone with a credit card.

Scammers have taken a similar approach in recent years, but in this case the victim said the caller provided an account number. We urge you to take steps to protect your account number and other sensitive information.

We also remind you that no one from City Utilities or Idaho Falls Power will contact you by phone and threaten disconnection of service if payment is not made immediately.

The City does not take payments by phone through outgoing calls, although customers can make a payment by calling (844) 235-2019, a secure toll-free number.

If you receive a call from someone claiming to represent Idaho Falls Power or the City, we encourage you end the call and call us at 612-8430 or 612-8144 to confirm it was a legitimate call or verify the status of your account.
