IDAHO FALLS — A convicted felony has been arrested after allegedly possessing an illegal firearm.

Police say they responded to the 700 block of May Street around 11:45 p.m. Friday night to a report of a suspicious vehicle.

In the vehicle police made contact with 22‐year‐old Joel Santos and a 17‐year‐old girl. Police say both were in possession of open containers of alcohol.

Police had probable cause to search the vehicle, after doing so it was discovered that Santos was in possession of a firearm.

Santos has a felony conviction from 2013 when he was found guilty of introducing major contraband to a correctional facility.

Court records show Santos was sent on a rider program within the Department of Corrections, but did not complete the programming. He was released from prison in June.

Santos was arrested and charged with felony possession of a firearm and misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
