RIGBY — A new local police chief has plans to unite his community with its officers.

This week EastIdahoNews.com spent some time with Rigby’s newest police chief, Sam Tower, and asked him questions about his plans for the department.

He has been chief since Oct. 1, prior to he was a detective with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

During our ride along with Tower, he told us what his impressions of the department are after his first two weeks in office.

Tower also spoke about what goals he has for the police department and his plans, if any, for change.

We asked if there were any concerns in accepting the position, even after the same City Council recently considered removing the department entirely.

Tower takes the place of former police chief Keith Hammon, who was fired in August in a 6-0 vote. At the time, Hammon said he was “shocked” to learn he was being terminated.

After Hammon was let go, about a dozen people applied for the job. Rigby Mayor Jason Richardson told EastIdahoNews.com that all the applicants interviewed by the mayor and City Council were qualified, but Tower was best suited to be the city’s top cop.
