UPDATE 1:00 p.m.

The following is a news release from the Madison Fire Department.

Today at 8:27 a.m., Madison Fire Department responded to a report of a possible structure fire at 919 S. 5th W. in Rexburg.

Madison County Dispatch reported there was an unconscious teenage female in the house.

A patrol officer with the Rexburg Police Department arrived on scene within minutes of the call and found the girl had been brought outside. The patrol officer began CPR when no pulse or breathing were found.

Upon arrival, paramedics began caring for the girl and transported her to Madison Memorial Hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.

“Our hearts are heavy,” said Madison Fire Department Chief Corey Child. “We offer our greatest prayers and condolences to the family and recognize this as a great time of need.”

Chief Child said upon arrival the fire department found the attic area of the home involved in fire. The fire was directly above a wood burning stove. The family confirmed a fire had been started in their wood burning stove yesterday afternoon or evening.

The fire is still being investigated by the fire department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, but it appears the heat in the stovepipe caused cellulose insulation to ignite in the attic thus igniting the trusses. The fire in the attic is believed to have been burning since the previous day.

The estimated amount of loss to the home is $35,000. Madison Fire Department had two engines, two ambulances, a command vehicle, and 15 personnel on scene. All units cleared the scene at 10:59 a.m.

“I appreciate the great efforts of the Madison Fire Department and the professional assistance of the Rexburg Police Department and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office on this incident, Chief Child Said. “Our deepest sympathies are extended to the family at this difficult time.”
