Bonneville D93 settles on name, mascot for new high school

The following is a news release from Bonneville Joint School District 93.

BONNEVILLE COUNTY — Two committees, multiple surveys, and countless hours later, the D93 Board of Trustees has a name and mascot for its new high school.

The new high school will be named Thunder Ridge with the mascot of Titans.

An advisory committee was tasked with combing through the more than 5,700 name suggestions from the community. A survey was then conducted to gauge the level of support from the community, faculty, and students for each of the selected names and mascots.

Amy Landers of the Board of Trustees credited this information before making her motion. Board Member and Chair of the Advisory Committee, Greg Calder also referenced the survey results before casting his vote.

“At the end of the day, I think the survey is pretty darn clear,” said Calder. “Thunder Ridge was the clear number one in all categories.”

The motion for the Thunder Ridge Titans came after a previous motion for Ridgeline Titans failed to get a majority of the votes from the Board of Trustees. Chairman McBride made the motion to name it Ridgeline because it didn’t have opposition that Black Canyon had and there wouldn’t be any confusion between it and Thunder Stadium, the district’s football and track venue.

During their discussions, Jeff Bird of the Board of Trustees pointed out that nearly two-thirds of the survey participants had Thunder Ridge as their first or second choice.

Amy Landers made the motion for the combination of Thunder Ridge Titans. It was seconded by Vice-Chair Paul Jenkins. This was followed by a roll call vote where it passed unanimously.

Thunder Ridge is scheduled to open in time for students in the Fall of 2018.
