ORIGINAL STORY:

RIGBY — A fire at the north Rigby electrical substation has left thousands without power Wednesday night.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Central Fire District are currently on the scene. It’s unclear what caused the fire.

Rocky Mountain Power officials estimate some 27,528 customers are without power in Ashton, St. Anthony, Rexburg, Sugar City, Rigby and Ririe.

Fall River Electric customers are also reporting outages in Madison and Fremont counties.

Rocky Mountain Power officials say a team has been dispatched to fix the problem, however, as of 11 p.m. they are no longer giving a concrete restoration time. Central Fire District officials tell EastIdahoNews.com it could be at least several hours.

One woman living near the substation told EastIdahoNews.com she heard what she thought was an explosion at the substation. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed a fire at the facility.

Central Fire District Assistant Chief Carl Anderson says locals should turn off unnecessary electrical household appliances to assist in the restoration efforts.

Fremont County Emergency Management Coordinator Keith Richey emailed EastIdahoNews.com and said if anyone in Fremont County needs somewhere to warm up, the South Fremont Fire Department in St. Anthony has a backup generator and heat and so does the Ashton Living Center.

EastIdahoNews.com will update this story with more details when we receive them.
