SUGAR CITY — First- through third-graders at a local elementary school got the chance to run with local firefighters in Thursday — despite the freezing weather.

Some 250 students at Central Elementary School participated in “Run with a Firefighter and EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) Day,” as a part of the school’s Pacer Walking/Running Club.

“They brought out a big fire truck and the ambulance. Several fire men and EMT’s came out and ran with the kids,” Central Elementary Physical Education specialist Connie Dunn said.

The Pacer program started four years ago and promotes active living for elementary-aged students. This school year kids have a goal to run or walk a combined total of 10,000 miles.

“The first year we ran 5,500 miles and last year we ran a little over 8,000 miles. This year we set a goal to run 10,000 miles and right now we’re at 4,770, so I think we’ll hit 5,000 by Christmas,” Dunn said.

Dunn said Thursday the temperature was 10 degrees and students ran a combined total of 272.54 miles. This is the first year Pacer club has hosted “Run with Days.”

“We started last month with our first “Run with Day,” (which) was run with an officer and we invited the Madison County and Fremont County Sheriff’s (offices) and the State Highway Patrol,” Dunn said.

Dunn said teacher and parents have been actively involved with the Pacer program, and students at Central Elementary School are looking forward to more “Run with…” events.

“The kids are excited to see different facets of the community involved. In fact they’re constantly saying, ‘Who are we going to have on our next Run with Day?” Dunn said.
