IDAHO FALLS — A police officer has passed away after a prolonged illness, the Idaho Falls Police Department tells EastIdahoNews.com.

Officer Leen VanHulten, 54, died at his home late Sunday night, according to a death notice.

He had worked for the department since August 1993. Department officials say they are heartbroken about the death.

“These types of things are devastating for us,” police spokeswoman Joelyn Hansen said. “For us it’s not just losing a co-worker — it’s losing a family member. We are definitely heartbroken and feeling the loss. He was a good guy, a hard worker and a great officer. He had a big impact on the department and will be remembered for a long time.

The police department posted a heartfelt tribute to him on social media on Monday.

In the tribute he was recognized for his dedication to youth. He worked as a school resource officer in Idaho Falls School District 91 in the early 2000s.

“He continuously strived to build positive relationships and understanding between law enforcement and youth. He was recognized many times by his peers for the great work he did during his service,” the tribute reads.

Most recently, VanHulten worked the graveyard shift in the department.

Funeral arrangements for VanHulten have not yet been announced.
