Winter storm upgraded; wind advisory issued

  Published at

IDAHO FALLS — The National Weather Service has expanded a winter weather advisory to encompass a large section of eastern Idaho.

All or portions of the following counties are under the advisory: Clark, Fremont, Madison, Teton, Bonneville, Bingham, Bannock, Caribou, Bear Lake and Oneida. The storm extends into western Wyoming and northern Utah, which are also under a winter weather advisory. Some 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected in areas above 6,000 feet. Less than two inches are expected in the valleys.

NWS officials predict difficult travel due to slick roads — especially on passes and lesser traveled roads near the Wyoming border.

The winter storm advisory expires at 6 p.m. Monday, however, snow is forecast through Tuesday. There is also a low to moderate chance of snow or rain on every other day this week, according to an NWS forecast.

Additionally, a high wind advisory is in effect for areas surrounding Rexburg, Idaho Falls and Pocatello.

Wind speeds will increase to between 30 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Strong cross winds can make driving difficult especially for high profile vehicles. In addition, blowing snow may create areas with lower visibility and drifting across roads, according to an NWS alert. The wind advisory expires at 6 p.m. Monday.

No road closures have been reported.
