DAILY FORECAST: Flood warnings upgraded in eastern Idaho

IDAHO FALLS — A major flood warning has been issued along the Portneuf River for Wednesday, March 15.

Due to snow melt, the river in Bannock County is expected to crest above 8.5 feet by Wednesday night, which will cause moderate flooding. The river could rise to 10.1 feet by Thursday morning.

At 10 feet significant flooding of agricultural land will occur in the Inkom and Blackrock area. Lowland flooding will occur along sections of the river in Pocatello from the Portnuef Gap to the Cheyenne Avenue Bridge and downstream of the concrete channel beginning at Sacajawea Park.

A flood advisory, which means flooding is imminent or already occurring, has also been issued in southeastern Bear Lake County and in Bingham County for the following communities: Dingle, Pegram, Aberdeen, Springfield, and Moreland, Pingree and Taber. Minor flooding of roads is being reported.

The rest of eastern Idaho remains under a flood watch through Wednesday afternoon with minor flooding occurring in low-lying areas and near homes in various parts of eastern Idaho.

The following cities are under the flood watch: Burley, Rupert, Heyburn, St. Anthony, Ashton, Island Park, Driggs, Victor, Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Pocatello, Malad City, Oakley, Rockland, Henry, Soda Springs, Downey, Lava Hot Springs, Preston, Montpelier, Hailey, Ketchum, Bellevue, Arco, Challis, and Mackay.

No major road closures are being reported as of 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Idaho Falls and Rexburg

The region will be mostly sunny Wednesday with highs of 53 to 63 degrees. North winds of 10 mph are expected, which will increase slightly by nightfall. During the night it’ll be cloudy with a 20 percent chance of rain after midnight and lows of 34 to 43 degrees.

Pocatello and Blackfoot

Pocatello, Blackfoot, Firth and Shelley will be sunny Wednesday with highs of 58 to 68 degrees. Northwest winds of up to 10 mph during the day. Clouds will roll in at night with a slight chance of rain after midnight. Lows of 36 to 44 degrees are expected at night with southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph.

St. Anthony, Ashton, Island Park, Driggs, and Victor

The Upper Valley and Teton Valley will be mostly sunny Wednesday with highs of 50 to 59 degrees. It will get cloudy at night with a chance of rain after midnight and lows of 34 to 41 degrees.

Arco, Challis, and Mackay

It’ll be mostly sunny Wednesday with highs of 49 to 59 degrees. There is a chance of rain and snow in the evening with temperature lows of 31 to 38 degrees.

Henry, Soda Springs, Downey, and Lava Hot Springs

It should be sunny all day Wednesday with highs of 54 to 64 degrees. At night it will be cloudy with a slight chance of rain after midnight and lows of 34 to 41 degrees.
