Alabama Basketball Fires Head Coach Anthony Grant

Alabama Basketball Fires Head Coach Anthony Grant Mitchell Layton/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- While many college basketball teams around the country are prepared to participate in the NCAA Tournament, Alabama has fired head coach Anthony Grant. Grant spent six seasons at Tuscaloosa, and won at least 20 games in three of those seasons. He took them to three NIT Tournaments and one appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The team started this season strong, going 12-3, but they wound up finishing the season at 18-14. "In this business we are ultimately judged by wins and losses on the court and, for a variety of reasons, we haven't made satisfactory progress in that area," Alabama athletic director Bill Battle said in a statement. "We have a great university, and an excellent athletics program that has expectations for all of our teams to meet the highest standards in competition, in the classroom and in the community. Alabama plays Illinois on Tuesday in the first round of the NIT Tournament, but no interim coach has been named yet. Overall, Grant went 117-85 as Alabama's head coach. SEC Championship Game Preview

SEC Championship Game Preview Streeter Lecka/Getty Images(TUSCALOOSA, Al.) -- Top-ranked Alabama will take on the Missouri Tigers in the SEC Championship game on Saturday. The Crimson Tide remain in the top spot in the College Football Playoff rankings, and head coach Nick Saban wants his team to remain focused. "This is a new season," Saban said on Monday. "We look forward to the challenges of the future, what we need to do to get ready to play a very good team in the SEC Championship game." "The SEC Championship game is a great opportunity for our players," Saban continued.  "It's a great competitive venue, one of the most exciting games that I've had the opportunity to compete in." The Tigers are averaging 28.6 points per game and Alabama is only giving up 16.9. Head coach Gary Pinkel knows it'll be a challenge against the Crimson Tide offense, especially since Missouri is 7-1 in their SEC games this year. "Alabama's got a very good football team," Pinkel said. "Nick's done a great job with that program and we're going to play a very potent offensive team and obviously a very good defensive team." Nick Saban on Auburn: We Remember Last Year

Nick Saban on Auburn: We Remember Last Year Streeter Lecka/Getty Images(TUSCALOOSA, Alabama) -- Alabama is hoping to avoid another shocking defeat to Auburn this year in the Iron Bowl on Saturday. In the final play of last year's game, Chris Davis returned a missed field goal by Alabama for a 100-yard touchdown run, stunning top-ranked Alabama. Head coach Nick Saban said Monday that this is what the game is all about. "We all kind of remember what happened," he added. "I think that it was very disappointing to all of us here, not just the last play, but the last five minutes of the game, that we never finished the game like we needed to and it was a tough way to lose a game." "The Iron Bowl is one of the greatest rivalries in college football and means a lot to people in the state, regardless of which side you're on," Saban continued.  "As a competitor it's a great opportunity because this game has had a lot of significance over the last few years." Alabama currently sits in the number one spot in the College Football Playoff rankings. Meanwhile, Auburn is 4-3 in their SEC matchups this year and are 8-3. "Their offense is one of the most productive in the country," Saban said. "They got a very good scheme. [Auburn quarterback] Nick Marshall does a fantastic job of executing that on the field." Marshall has tossed 15 touchdowns this year and thrown for 1,859 yards. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio
