Commissioner Approves Rose’s Participation in All-Star Game

Commissioner Approves Rose’s Participation in All-Star GameiStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The most infamous man in baseball has been given the blessing by Commissioner Manfred to participate in this year's All-Star activities in Cincinnati. Pete Rose, baseball's all-time hits leader, has been banned by baseball since 1989 for gambling on games. He recently applied for reinstatement to the game with new MLB commissioner Rob Manfred. Rose, 74, was a player on the Reds from 19 seasons (1963-1978, 1984-1986) and served as Cincinnati's manager from 1984 to 1989. He won the NL Rookie of the Year, won three World Series -- including being named MVP in the 1975 -- with Cincinnati. As part of the ban, Rose is not able to access areas any fan would not be allowed to attend, without the permission of the commissioner. Fox, who will broadcast the All-Star Game, recently hired Rose to serve as a studio analyst for their baseball coverage.   Fo llow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.

Carmelo Anthony Says He Will Likely Shut It Down After All-Star Game NBA via New York Knicks(NEW YORK) -- New York Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony said in an interview with ESPN Radio Thursday that it is "very likely" he will shut it down for the season after the All-Star Game."It's very likely. It's very likely. Now I've got to start thinking about the future," Anthony said to Marc Stein, Marc Kestecher and P.J. Carlesimo on ESPN Radio. "This season is this season. So I really want to just sit down with my team and sit down with the proper people to just kind of plan this thing out and see exactly what I have to do to get done and just to fix it."Anthony has been dealing with soreness in his left knee for months, and is playing for a Knicks team that has the worst record in the NBA.Although he is hurt, Anthony expects to play in Sunday's All-Star Game at Madison Square Garden. It's the first time New York City has hosted the game since 1998."Even if I come out and just play a couple minutes and just wave," Anthony said. "I don't think the fans deserve (seeing me miss the game). They voted me in for a reason, so at least I can show them that I appreciate that by just participating in the game."The 30-year-old Anthony has played in 40 games this season, averaging 24.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. The Knicks are 0-13 with Anthony out of the lineup. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.

Team Toews Tops Team Foligno in NHL All-Star Game iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(COLUMBUS, Ohio) -- If you're a fan of low-scoring hockey, then the NHL All-Star Game isn't for you. On Sunday, Team Toews came out on top over Team Foligno, 17-12. It was the highest-scoring All-Star Game in NHL history. New York Islanders center John Tavares scored four goals in the game, which matched a record for the game. There was so much offense that Tavares didn't even win the MVP Award. That honor went to Columbus Blue Jackets center Ryan Johansen, who was playing in front of the Blue Jacket fans. He was given the award after the fans voted him the winner on Twitter. "It's meant a lot, being a part of it -- seeing the fans and how much they've been enjoying all the festivities," he said. "We did a two-hour (autograph) signing. Everybody just seemed to be having a great time. All the kids were laughing and having a lot of fun." Philadelphia Flyers winger Jake Voracek had a memorable game as he tied another record with six points. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.

AL Wins in Jeter’s Last All-Star Game Hurrah

AL Wins in Jeter’s Last All-Star Game Hurrah Elsa/Getty Images(MINNEAPOLIS) -- Derek Jeter went 2-for-2 in his final All-Star game, and Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run home run to help the American League down the National League 5-3 Tuesday. Jeter was the highlight of the game. The 14-time All-Star doubled to leadoff the bottom half of the first inning and proceeded to score on Mike Trout's triple. Jeter then led off the bottom of the third with a single. Jeter took the field in the top of the fourth but Alexei Ramirez ran out onto the field to replace him. That sparked almost everyone at Target Field to give No. 2 a standing ovation while the song "New York, New York" played in the background. Jeter then went into the AL dugout where he received hugs from his teammates before coming back on the field for a curtain call. After the celebration ended the NL tied the game 3-3 when Jonathan Lucroy doubled in pinch-runner Dee Gordon. But Mike Trout, who was named the game's MVP, gave the AL the lead for good in the fifth when he laced an RBI double down the left field line. The game ended with some excitement for the home crowd as Twins pitcher Glen Perkins pitched a perfect ninth to earn the save for the AL. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio
