Linebacker John Abraham Returns to the Cardinals

Linebacker John Abraham Returns to the Cardinals David Dermer/Diamond Images/Getty Images(TEMPE, Ariz.) -- Even though he recently contemplated retirement, linebacker John Abraham is rejoining the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday. Abraham suffered a concussion in the team's season opener against the San Diego Chargers. He was suffering from apparent memory loss, and at age 36, his playing career was in doubt. He was even doubting his desire to play football anymore, but now Abraham is feeling much better and is ready to resume his football career. "A lot of it was to do with the headaches," Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said. "First real big one he's ever had. There's other things that we're dealing with, and he's fine with those." "He's ready to play," Arians added. Abraham is in his 14th NFL sesaon and is the NFL's active leader in sacks at 133.5. He ranks ninth on the all-time sack list as well. It is currently unknown if Abraham will be activated for Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Cardinals LB Abraham Takes Leave, Contemplating Retirement

Cardinals LB Abraham Takes Leave, Contemplating Retirement David Dermer/Diamond Images/Getty Images(TEMPE, Ariz.) -- Arizona Cardinals linebacker John Abraham has taken a leave of absence and told his coach Bruce Arians that he's losing his desire to play football. The 36-year-old Abraham, who is the NFL's all-time active sacks leader (133.5), left the team's win over the San Diego Chargers in the third quarter Monday with a concussion. According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Abraham has dealt with severe memory loss for more than a year. "I think when you get to that age, and for whatever reason, if that game on Monday Night Football and that atmosphere didn't have you flying around like always or more, then something is missing," Arians said. "That's basically what he reflected to me. He said, 'There were times in that game I wasn't in it, and that's not fair to my teammates. I've got to decide if this is what I still really want to do.'"Abraham was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. He's played in 192 games since then recording 547 tackles, 47 forced fumbles, and one touchdown. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Cardinals Edge Chargers, 18-17, on Monday Night

Cardinals Edge Chargers, 18-17, on Monday Night Scott Boehm/Getty Images(GLENDALE, Ariz.) -- Veteran Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer rallied the Cardinals past the Chargers on opening night with a 13-yard touchdown pass to John Brown late in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals defense did the rest and batted down a Philip Rivers pass on fourth down for the 18-17 win. "It was a sweet little touchdown," Palmer said of Browns first-career touchdown. "That's what he does. He's so shifty. It's like somebody's controlling him with a joystick. He is so quick and so hard to find on those little quick screens." Arizona was down 17-6 entering the fourth quarter and Palmers' two touchdown passes in the fourth gave them the lead for good. Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald had only one reception in the fourth quarter, but kept his streak alive at 150 games with at least one reception. "Too many mistakes. Too many mistakes in crucial times," Rivers said after the game. "We had plenty of opportunities. Offensively, we had too many mistakes in crucial times that turned into points." Cardinals’ Darnell Dockett Out Entire Season with Torn ACL

Cardinals’ Darnell Dockett Out Entire Season with Torn ACL Darrin Klimek/Thinkstock(GLENDALE, Ariz.) -- Before a single regular season game has been played, the Arizona Cardinals have lost one of their best defensive players.  Defensive end Darnell Dockett has suffered a torn ACL and will miss the entire 2014 season. Dockett suffered the injury during practice on Monday on a passing play during an 11-on-11 period. "Thank you all for your support & get well wishes. I really do appreciate it. This will be a tough road to recovery but I've been through worse," Dockett tweeted early Tuesday morning. The 33-year-old Dockett is a three-time Pro Bowl pick who was set to enter his 11th season with the Cardinals. "He's a great player, a guy we count on day-in and day-out to be a leader and take us where we want to go," defensive tackle Calais Campbell said. "...Hopefully he'll come back soon." Last season, Dockett recorded 46 tackles to go along with 4.5 sacks. He was a key part of a Cardinals' defense that was ranked first overall in stopping the pass, and ranked sixth overall in the NFL. Cowboys Sign Tyron Smith to Eight-Year Extension Jim McIssac/Getty Images(OXNARD, Calif.) --  Tyron Smith is staying in Dallas for the long-haul. The Cowboys signed the Pro Bowl offensive tackle to an eight-year contract extension through 2023; a deal that could be worth as much as $110 million. Smith, 23, will receive $40 million guaranteed, as well as a $10 million signing bonus, according to ESPN.  He had two years remaining on his previous contract after the Cowboys picked up the fifth-year option of his rookie deal in the spring. "We talk about building a program and building a football team and he was the first player that we took three years ago in that draft," coach Jason Garrett said. "He's just been everything we've wanted to build this program and this team around." Smith was drafted by the Cowboys with the 9th overall pick in 2011.  Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson, drafted 5th overall that same year, signed a five-year, $70 million extension on Tuesday. Cardinals Reward Cornerback Patrick Peterson with Five-Year Extension

Cardinals Reward Cornerback Patrick Peterson with Five-Year Extension Doug Pensinger/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Defensive playmakers are becoming a premium in the NFL and the Cardinals are taking care of their own as they've rewarded cornerback Patrick Peterson with a five-year extension worth $70 million with $48 million guaranteed. "Happy to announce my 5 year extension with @AZCARDINALS ! $70M and $48M Guaranteed!! #AZCardinals #P2Nation #YearOfTheCardinal," Peterson tweeted Tuesday night. Petterson is now the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL in terms of total money. He beats out the Browns' Joe Hadden, who got $68 million earlier this offseason. Petterson was the fifth overall pick in the 2011 Draft, and has been everything the Cardinals hoped they'd be getting. He's made three Pro Bowls and is a two-time NFL All Pro. He's considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL and is also an explosive returner, and sometimes mixes in with the team on offense. Since his rookie season, Petterson is third in the NFL in interceptions with 12. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio
