Bruins Extend Head Coach Julien

Bruins Extend Head Coach Julien

Mitchell Layton/NHLI via Getty Images(BOSTON) -- The Boston Bruins have agreed to a multi-year contract extension with head coach Claude Julien, the team announced Sunday.

"We have worked at this for a few months, but there was never any doubt in my mind that this would get done," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said in a statement. "Claude is one of the top coaches in the NHL and has consistently shown a passion for winning through his coaching."

While the Bruins have never released the terms of Julien's contract during his tenure, reports say the 54-year-old agreed to a three-year extension on Sunday morning. This is the third extension during his time in Boston, the second was just before the lockout-shortened season.

Julien is in his eighth season as Bruins coach, taking the team to seven straight playoff appearances. Boston has been to two Stanley Cup finals under Julien, winning the championship in 2011.

The Bruins are 317-171-65 since Julien took over prior to the 2007-08 season. Julien is the second-longest tenured coach in the National Hockey League behind Detroit's Mike Babcock, who is in his 10th season.

Bruins Lose Krug for 2-3 Weeks

Christian Petersen/Getty Images(WILMINGTON, Mass.) -- The Boston Bruins' blueline takes another hit.Torey Krug will miss two to three weeks with a broken finger, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli announced Wednesday morning.Krug broke the finger after getting slashed during his final shift in the Bruins loss to Minnesota Tuesday night.Krug joins a growing list of injured Boston defensemen. The B's are already without captain Zdeno Chara for four to six weeks with a left knee injury and Kevan Miller, who has a dislocated right shoulder.Despite the growing list of injuries, Bruins center Patrice Bergeron is staying upbeat.“For us, with our system, it’s about not just about the defensemen, but really the whole aspect of all the guys on the ice and playing a good system,” Bergeron said. “And that’s what we need to have.”The Bruins (5-6-0, 10pts) re-called defensemen David Warsofsky and Joe Morrow from their AHL affiliate in Providence to pick up the slack.

Bruins’ Defenseman Zdeno Chara Out 4-6 Weeks with Knee Injury

Bruins’ Defenseman Zdeno Chara Out 4-6 Weeks with Knee Injury

Len Redkoles/NHLI via Getty Images(BOSTON) -- The Boston Bruins will be without one of the most imposing players in the NHL for the foreseeable future as defenseman Zdeno Chara will miss the next 4-6 weeks with a tear to the posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Chara suffered the injury on Thursday during the Bruins' game against the New York Islanders.

While the injury could have been a lot worse, Chara's absence will still felt on the team.

"You hope everyone else picks up the slack," Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said. "We've had a stretch before, might not have been four to six weeks, more like three weeks where Z was out. They don't happen too often, but you hope everyone picks up the slack and we play a solid defensive game."

Despite being in his 17th NHL season, ninth with the Bruins, the 37-year-old Chara is still one of the best defenseman in the NHL.

Since joining the Bruins in 2006, the team is 341-204-66 with Chara in the lineup during the regular season, and 8-7-5 without him.

During his time with the Bruins, Chara has never missed more than five-straight games.

Bruins Re-Sign Krug and Smith

Bruins Re-Sign Krug and Smith

Christian Petersen/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- Boston Bruins re-signed defenseman Torey Krug and forward Reilly Smith Monday. The two players each received one-year contracts worth an annual cap figure of $1.4 million. The signings mark the end of a long negotiation between the players and the B's."It was definitely tough," Smith said of the contract talks. "At times, you think you're fighting a three-way battle. You've got your own ideas, your agent is advising how he probably should and they've been in the business a long time and that's probably the advice you should take. The Bruins also have their ideas and ideologies of how they want the whole situation to go, so you're kind of bouncing ideas with everyone. Me and Torey were bouncing ideas off each other the whole time, because we just wanted to get to camp. It seems like it all worked out."The re-signing of Krug and Smith is huge for a Boston team that finished last season with the most points in the NHL.Krug, 23, played in 79 games last season recording 14 goals and 26 assists. As for the 23-year-old Smith, he played in 82 games last season, scoring 23 goals and handing out 31 assists, mainly playing on the second line with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand.

Avalanche Sign Iginla

Avalanche Sign Iginla

Francois Laplante/Freestyle Photography/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Colorado Avalanche signed free agent winger Jarome Iginla to a three-year, $16 million contract Tuesday. The 37-year-old Iginla played last season with the Boston Bruins scoring 30 goals and dishing out 31 assists in 78 games, helping the Bruins reach the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal.Iginla had interest in re-signing with Boston, but the Bruins have a shortage of salary-cap space. "In the NHL it's hard to pick which team is going to win, but you want to be on a contender, and I think at this stage in my career that is very important," Iginla said to Sportsnet. "I know Boston, they have a great shot, a great team and they work very hard and they're committed. Unfortunately, it didn't end the way we wanted it to this year in Boston, but they'll be right back there and have a great shot again and I realize that. But it wasn't really a full option and Colorado, to me, is a young, dynamic team and they're just getting better."Last season the Avalanche won the Central Division title but lost in the first round of the playoffs in seven games to the Minnesota Wild.Iginla has played 17 NHL seasons split between Calgary, Pittsburgh, and Boston. He is a six-time All Star, who has scored 560 goals, tying him with Guy Lafleur for 24th on the NHL's all-time top scorers list.

Canadiens Bounce Bruins from Playoffs with 3-1 Game 7 Victory

Canadiens Bounce Bruins from Playoffs with 3-1 Game 7 Victory

Jared Wickerham/Getty Images(BOSTON) --  The Montreal Canadiens are heading to the Eastern Conference finals.

Dale Weise, Max Pacioretty, and Daniel Briere all scored goals as the Canadiens beat the Boston Bruins 3-1 on Wednesday night in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Bruins came into the playoffs as the defending Eastern Conference champions and the NHL's top team in the regular season.  They took a 3-2 series lead after Game 5, but were unable to close out their heated rivals.

"You have an opportunity to get one step closer to the Stanley Cup," said Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban. "We deserve it. We played hard. Nothing has come easy for us all year."

Carey Price made 29 saves for the Canadiens, who will face the New York Rangers in the conference finals. Game 1 will be played on Saturday in Montreal.

"Carey Price was outstanding. Gave them a chance to win every night," Bruins coach Claude Julien said of the goalie who backstopped Canada to Olympic gold in February. "You play the way he did, it gives his team a lot of confidence and one of the keys to their success."

It's just the second time since 1993 that the Canadiens have reached the third round of the playoffs.
