iStockphoto(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) -- The Tampa Bay Rays (22-28) outlasted the Boston Red Sox (20-28) in 15 innings on Saturday, 6-5, sending the defending champions to their ninth straight defeat.

Rays pinch-runner Cole Figueroa scored the winning run from second base after Red Sox reliever Andrew Miller (1-4) threw the ball into centerfield while attempting to start a double play.

Boston jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning with catcher A.J. Pierzynski leading the way with a three-run home run off of Rays starter David Price. Tampa Bay tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth on a two-run double by Rays outfielder Brandon Guyer.

Rays left-handed pitcher Cesar Ramos (2-3) picked up the win in relief, tossing three scoreless innings.

Hannah Foslien/Getty Images(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) -- Boston Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained right hamstring.

The 33-year-old Victorino injured the hamstring after running out a bunt in the ninth inning Friday night.

Victorino has already missed 22 games this season due to the hamstring, which was injured in the team's last spring training game.

The 11-season major league veteran has played in 21 games for the Red Sox this season hitting .242 with one home run, 10 runs scored and 10 RBIs.

Boston recalled outfielder Daniel Nava from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Victorino's place.

Nava started the season in Boston but hit .149 in 17 games before being demoted.

Red Sox will Start Stephen Drew Out in Class A

Red Sox will Start Stephen Drew Out in Class A

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.) -- The Boston Red Sox are eager to get newly-signed shortstop Stephen Drew into their lineup, but they'll start him out in Class A Greenville Drive as he gets into game shape.

Drew signed with the team earlier this week because he coudln't find a team willing to take on the draft compensation or his high salary, so now he's back with the Red Sox.

The Red Sox plan for now is to start Drew for two games at shortstop, and DH for another. Once they see how he performs, they'll promote him to Doulbe-A Portland or Triple-A Pawtucket.

Known primarily for his work with a glove, the 31-year-old Drew had a nice offensive season in 2013 for the Red Sox. In 124 games, Drew batted .253 with 13 home runs and also drove in 67 runs.

The Red Sox will take help any way they can get it. After winning the World Series last season, the team has struggled to regain their championship form.

Through 47 games, the team is fourth in the AL East a 20-27.

Red Sox Bring Back SS Stephen Drew

Red Sox Bring Back SS Stephen Drew

Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(BOSTON) --  Stephen Drew is back with the Boston Red Sox.

Drew has agreed to a one-year deal with Boston after the shortstop rejected a $14.1 million qualifying offer from the team during the offseason.  He had hoped to land a multiyear contract with another team, but it never came to fruition.

The deal will reportedly pay Drew $10.2 million for the remainder of the season if he passes a physical. He is currently in Boston and will undergo tests on Wednesday.

"We have the ability, provided all things work out, we've added a very good player to improve this team," Red Sox manager John Farrell said Tuesday. "That's the thing Ben (Cherington) and ownership have repeatedly shown: when a need exists, they'll do whatever is capable and whatever is available to improve the team.

"Stephen's return to us could very well do that. It will add stability to the left side of the infield."

If Drew passes his physical, he will need some time in the minor leagues before being able to play with the Red Sox. Once he is ready to return, he is expected to man the shortstop position with Xander Bogaerts moving to third base.

Drew hit .254 with 13 home runs and 67 RBIs for the Red Sox last season, helping them capture the 2013 World Series championship.

Tigers Sweep Defending Champs in Boston

Tigers Sweep Defending Champs in Boston

Jim Rogash/Getty Images(BOSTON, Mass.) -- In a rematch of the 2013 American League Championship Series, the outcome was decidedly different. With a 6-2 win on Sunday night, the Detroit Tigers won their sixth straight game and swept the defending champion Boston Red Sox.

The last time these two teams met, Boston completed an improbable Game 6 comeback to eventually move on and win their third World Series title in the last decade. Thanks to an impressive offensive performance, the Tigers got a small stroke of revenge and earned their first sweep at Fenway Park since 1983.

Boston took an early 1-0 lead on a Xander Bogaerts' RBI single in the second inning. The lead did not last long as Detroit scored three times in the third. Miguel Cabrera knotted the score with an RBI single before Victor Martinez launched his tenth home run of the season, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Detroit owns the best record in the majors at 27-12 and has now won 11 consecutive games on the road and 15 of their last 18 overall.

"It really comes down to the starting pitching and the bullpen," said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. "The starters have set the tempo and got us deep into the game. We've also got some big hits. Miggy and Victor have been hitting well all season long."

That same blueprint led to success on Sunday night. Anibal Sanchez (1-2), returning from a brief stint on the disabled list, went five innings allowing just two runs on five hits. Meanwhile, Tigers hitters roughed up Jake Peavy (1-2), scoring five runs and totalling 11 hits against the Red Sox (20-23) starter.

Ian Kinsler had four hits while Cabrera and Martinez each drove in a pair of runs.  Tori Hunter added a solo shot in the seventh, increasing the lead to 6-2.

Athletics Avoid Sweep, Top Red Sox in 10 Innings

Photos.com/Thinkstock(BOSTON) -- Yoenis Cespedes hit an RBI infield single in the top of the tenth and Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless bottom half of the inning to give the Oakland Athletics a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox Sunday. The win allowed Oakland (19-12) to avoid the sweep and remain two games ahead of Texas for first place in the AL West. The Red Sox (15-17) had a chance to do some damage in the bottom of the tenth. Will Middlebrooks opened the inning with a base hit which ended up with him at second when A's center fielder Coco Crisp misplayed the ball. Jackie Bradley Jr. then bunted the ball down the first base line to try and advance Middlebrooks to third, but A's first baseman Daric Barton charged the ball and threw to third to get Middlebrooks. "He made a terrific play," Oakland skipper Bob Melvin said. "That's a gutsy play. That's a play that if the runner gets over, they can win the game with a hit. A gutsy play."

Athletics starting pitcher Sonny Gray pitched six innings, allowing two runs and striking out three in the win.
