Brazil Booed After Third-Place Loss

Brazil Booed After Third-Place Loss

Michael Dodge/Getty Images(BRASILIA, Brazil) — The host country was already on thin ice with their fans when they lost 7-1 to Germany in the World Cup semifinals. On Saturday, a 3-0 loss to the Netherlands resulted in Brazil being booed off the pitch in front of their own nation.
Thanks in part to some poor defending, the Dutch ran rampant in the 2014 FIFA World Cup third-place match. Robin Van Persie started the performance by converting on a penalty kick in the third minute. Arjen Robben went sprinting past the Brazilian defense but was dragged down by Thiago Silva just inside the box, awarding the spot kick.
Daley Blind, son of assistant coach Danny, tallied his first-ever international goal when David Luiz misplayed a ball in the box. Instead of heading it over his own net for a set piece, he attempted to clear it but instead directed the ball right to Blind’s foot.
Holland added another goal in stoppage time from Georginio Wijnaldum while goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen stopped the two sure shots he had to face.

Germany’s Klose Sets All-Time World Cup Goals Record

Ian MacNicol/Getty Images(BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil) — On Tuesday, German striker Miroslav Klose broke the record for most goals scored at the World Cup.The 36-year-old Klose scored his 16th, and record-breaking goal, in the 23rd minute of Germany’s 7-1 win over Brazil in the World Cup semifinal. Klose tied the record, held by former Brazil striker Ronaldo, in Germany’s Group Stage game against Ghana earlier in the tournament. Klose, who is Germany’s all-time leading scorer with 71 goals in 136 matches, becomes only the third player ever to score in four straight World Cups. The other two are West Germany’s Uwe Seeler and Brazil’s Pele.

Neymar Suffers Broken Vertebra Out For World Cup

Neymar Suffers Broken Vertebra Out For World Cup

Pool/Getty Images(FORTALEZA, Brazil) — The host nation will be without its most popular, and most powerful, player for the rest of the World Cup. Neymar suffered a broken vertebra late in Friday’s quarterfinal matchup with Colombia.
Neymar went to the ground after a collision with Juan Camilo Zuniga in the 88th minute and had to be carried off the field on a stretcher. Hours after the match, which Brazil won 2-1, team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar delivered the bad news.
“It is a benign fracture,” Lasmar said. “This news is not easy, but he will not be available at this World Cup. The fracture does not require surgery. There will be a conservative treatment and [he] will need physiotherapy and comfort to ease the pain.”
The 22-year-old is the face of the Brazilian National Team and one of the top scorers in the world. Now, the host squad must find a way to continue their hope of winning the World Cup on home soil without one of their most talented players.
Brazil will face Germany on Tuesday in semi-final action. To make matters worse, captain Thiago Silva will not be available as well after picking up a second yellow card in the tournament.

Brazil Advances Past Chile in Penalty Kicks

Brazil Advances Past Chile in Penalty Kicks

Jean Catuffe/Getty Images(BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil) — It wasn’t easy but Brazil advances to the World Cup quarterfinals by beating Chile 3-2 in penalty kicks, after finishing the first 120 minutes in a 1-1 draw.
Neymar scored on Brazil’s fifth penalty shot and Chile’s Gonzalo Jara’s missed the tying shot, nailing it off the post, to keep the host country alive.
“We needed this,” Brazil goalie Julio Cesar said. “I just hope that the next games don’t go to penalty kicks again because our family members and relatives might have a heart attack.”
Brazil started the scoring in the 18th minute when David Luiz scored his first World Cup goal. The lead didn’t last long, as Chile’s Alexis Sanchez slid one past Cesar and into the back of the net in the 38th minute to tie the match.
The rest of the game featured close calls but no goals. During stoppage time before the half, Chile almost scored off a corner but Luiz slid in front of the ball to keep the match tied.
Chile also had a chance in the 121st minute to end it, when Mauricio Pinilla’s smashed a shot that just hit the crossbar.
Brazil advances to take on Colombia Friday. The match is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. Eastern. You can catch that on ESPN.

Ochoa Leads Mexico to Draw with Brazil

Ochoa Leads Mexico to Draw with Brazil

FABRICE COFFRINI/AFP/Getty Images(FORTALEZA, Brazil) — Brazil had many scoring opportunities but could not slip one past Mexican goal keeper Guillermo Ochoa, leading the two countries to a 0-0 draw at the World Cup Tuesday. Ochoa was remarkable in net, making six saves — many from point-blank range — tying the country’s record for most saves by a keeper in a World Cup match since 1966. Ochoa started his masterful performance in the 26th minute when he dove to the right side of the net just in time to stop a header from Brazilian star, Neymar. Ochoa continued to thwart Brazil’s offensive attacks the rest of the game, resulting in Mexico’s first point ever versus Brazil in a World Cup game. “In the end, a 0-0 mirrors what happened, it was a very hard-fought match,” Brazilian head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said. “The draw wasn’t a good result because a victory would have already allowed us to advance, but we need to be able to respect our opponent, which played very well.”
The game leaves both Mexico and Brazil with four points after two games in Group A play, with Brazil holding the goal differential tiebreaker.
