Manziel Flips the Bird in Preseason Loss

Manziel Flips the Bird in Preseason Loss Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images(LANDOVER, Md.) -- It was not a good night for the Cleveland Browns offense, and the frustration showed when backup quarterback Johnny Manziel flipped the bird to the Washington Redskins sideline late in a 24-23 preseason loss. The incident occurred late in the third quarter after an incomplete pass in front of the Washington bench. As Manziel trotted back across the field, he raised his right hand and extended his middle finger in the direction of his opponents. The rookie admitted post-game that he exchanged words with the bench, and he should have responded better. "I felt like I did a good job of holding my composure throughout the night, and you have a lapse of judgment and slip up," said Manziel. While the play was not flagged, Manziel is subject to a fine of $11,025 from the NFL.  He can appeal the fine and have it limited to 25 percent of a weekly check, roughly $6,200. Manziel, like the entire Cleveland offense, struggled last night, going 5-for-13 with only 49 passing yards. The rookie did however connect with Dion Lewis for a short touchdown pass as the Browns fought to come back. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Manziel Impresses in Preseason Debut

Manziel Impresses in Preseason Debut Elsa/Getty Images(DETROIT) -- It wasn't the most glamorous of debuts, but Johnny Manziel raised some eyebrows in his first NFL preseason game. The rookie quarterback played four series for Cleveland in a 13-12 loss at Detroit on Saturday night.  While completing 7-of-11 pass attempts for 63 yards, Manziel also rushed for 27 yards on six carries. His longest of the night, a 16-yard scamper, gave fans a glimpse into the possible future of "Johnny Football" in the NFL.  "For me it was a good start," Manziel said. "Have to start somewhere and set a foundation." Brian Hoyer got the starting nod for Cleveland and was 6-of-11 for 92 passing yards, leading a pair of drives that resulted in field goals. Hoyer, who was the starter last year for the Browns, has not voiced a concern about potentially losing his job to Manziel. "That decision has not been made yet," said Cleveland head coach Mike Pettine. However, a source has told ESPN's Bob Holtzman there is a "very good chance" Manziel starts next week against Washington. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Josh Gordon Arrested for DWI

Josh Gordon Arrested for DWI Matt Sullivan/Getty Images(RALEIGH, N.C.) -- Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon continues to find himself in trouble. Already facing a possible year-long ban, Gordon was arrested Saturday in Raleigh, North Carolina, and charged with driving while impaired. Police spokesman Jim Sughrue said that Gordon was taken into custody after going 50 mph in a 30 mph zone around 3 a.m. Saturday. While no official word was given as to whether the impairment was alcohol or drug related, WNCN in Raleigh reported that the wide out's blood-alcohol level was .09. The legal limit in North Carolina is .08. Gordon was released on $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on August 26. Neither Gordon, nor his agent Drew Rosenhaus, had a comment on the arrest. "We are aware of the matter and are disappointed to learn of this situation. We will comment further at the appropriate time," Brown general manager Ray Farmer said in a statement. The 23-year-old could be banned for the entire upcoming season after failing a second drug test. Gordon was suspended four games in 2013 for what he said was the use of codeine. Manziel Determined to Be Starter Week 1

Manziel Determined to Be Starter Week 1 Elsa/Getty Images(BEREA, Ohio) -- Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel is poised and ready to be the starter come Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Manziel said at the end of his first offseason training program on Friday that he expects to be the starter over Brian Hoyer. "Absolutely," Manziel said.  "I want to play. That's what anybody wants to do. Anybody that's been a starter in the past, and been playing, they want to play," he said. "To say I don't want to be the starter, that would be ridiculous. "I absolutely want to start, that's my goal. Hopefully I can achieve that." Manziel credited Hoyer's work ethic and said that he can learn a lot from a quarterback that was an understudy to Tom Brady in New England. "What I can learn from him, from a routine standpoint, from a knowledge standpoint, and where I need to get to," Manziel said. "When camp starts, I'll have a better grasp of the playbook. It won't feel like I'm brand new to everything. But still, I think everything coach Pettine said was spot on, that Brian obviously is ahead -- he's been doing this a lot longer than I have. I'm a rookie, and so I have a lot of ground to catch up on." Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Mike Pettine Not Worried About Johnny Manziel’s Off-the-Field Behavior

Mike Pettine Not Worried About Johnny Manziel’s Off-the-Field Behavior Elsa/Getty Images(BEREA, Ohio) -- Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel has been the subject of media scrutiny thanks to how he's spent his time away from the football field since getting drafted. His head coach, Mike Pettine, has no issues with how his new quarterback is spending his time off. "I'm not concerned," Pettine said Tuesday after the Browns minicamp practice. "I would become concerned if it was something criminal, and I would be concerned if it affected his job." Photos have surfaced recently of Manziel partying in Vegas and attending other events that have seen paparazzi follow him like he's a Hollywood celebrity. If Pettine was concerned about Manziel's behavior this offseason, he admits it'd be hypocritical. "I was involved with an event this weekend," Pettine said, "and if there were cameras at certain times it probably wouldn't have been the most flattering. We had a good time but we were responsible. When it becomes irresponsible or it becomes part of something that involves breaking the law or we feel is a potential problem. we'll step in." Manziel was selected 22nd overall by the Browns. Brian Hoyer Wants to Participate in Full OTA Drills

Brian Hoyer Wants to Participate in Full OTA Drills Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images(BEREA, Ohio) -- Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer has been limited at the team's organized activities, but he's battling the coaching and training staff about when he'll get to participate in full 11-on-11 drills. Hoyer has spent all offseason recovering from a surgically repaired right knee that he injured in October and has been limited to just a shotgun position where defenders let up while pass rushing. "You never want to see someone else doing your job," Hoyer said Tuesday. "That’s the biggest thing for me. I feel I’m ready, and I know a lot of people who come back from this injury talk about the mental aspect. I think I’ve conquered that months ago." "So I know [the coaches and medical staff] emphasized it’s the best thing in my interest and for the team, but as the competitor in me, I want to be out there with my guys, calling the plays and running them." Hoyer understands the importance of being on the field with a team that just drafted former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. "My argument is OTAs, are they that important? For me, they are. This isn’t my third year in this offense. I’m trying to get out there and read plays that I haven’t ever run before," Hoyer said.  "I understand what’s at stake. I’m not stupid. I don’t want to get hurt here and not even be in training camp. I also know how much it means to be taking these reps right now." Hoyer wants to start working with the offense in full drills so he can implement himself in new offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's offense. "The NFL is a copycat league, so some of the plays I’m running with Kyle when I was in New England we stole from Kyle just to put in our offense," Hoyer said. "So there’s a lot of things that have carryover, but there’s certain things Kyle runs that I’ve never run before. So I’ve been begging to get those reps because I want to make the mistakes in OTAs, not when it comes to training camp." Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Joe Haden Is Happy to Stay with Browns

Joe Haden Is Happy to Stay with Browns NFL via Getty Images(BEREA, Ohio) -- Cornerback Joe Haden is happy to be playing in Cleveland for five more years. The Browns and Haden agreed to a $68 million five-year extension, which includes $45 million in guaranteed money. "This contract only makes me feel like now I have to play like the best corner in the league," Haden said Wednesday. "I love Cleveland, man. I really like it here. I enjoy it here. The fans are great. I never want to just bail out on anything. I started here. They drafted me," Haden continued. "And the fan base is one big part. The way they feel about the team and the Browns, I feel like if we can really start winning, there is no other place I'd rather play." The Browns selected Haden with the seventh overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft out of the University of Florida.  In 57 career games, Haden has registered 13 interceptions, 68 passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two sacks. The extension will keep Haden in a Browns uniform through the 2019 season. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio

Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam Says Johnny Manziel Is the Backup QB

Browns Owner Jimmy Haslam Says Johnny Manziel Is the Backup QB Elsa/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- While Cleveland Browns fans are greatly anticipating the start of the Johnny Manziel era, team owner Jimmy Haslam says the quarterback will not enter training camp as the team's starter. While addressing a luncheon in Canton, Ohio, at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Haslam said Manziel needs to start acting "like a backup quarterback." While Haslam was quick to praise his prized rookie, he also made it known that Manziel will have to beat out Brian Hoyer for the starting quarterback job. Hoyer had a nice run as the Browns' starting quarterback this past season, but suffered a torn ACL and was forced to miss a majority of the season. The Browns traded back into the first round to select Manziel in hopes that he will finally be the answer for the team at quarterback. While at Texas A&M, Manziel threw for 7,820 yards and accounted for 93 total touchdowns during his two seasons at Texas A&M. He also became the first freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy.
