Swisher Slams Cleveland Past Angels in Extras

Swisher Slams Cleveland Past Angels in Extras

Joe Robbins/Getty Images(CLEVELAND, Ohio) — Albert Pujols hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the top of the tenth that put Los Angeles ahead 3-1. Nick Swisher answered with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom half of the inning to give Cleveland a 5-3 victory on Thursday afternoon.

“When I first hit it, I said, all right, that’s a double,” said Swisher. “The next thing you know, it went out. I flipped my bat. I was going crazy.”

The two-out hit was Swisher’s only one of the day, striking out each time in his previous three at-bats. It was also the second time that the Indians (37-36) came from behind in the game. With a runner on third in the second, Cleveland starter Justin Masterson delivered a wild pitch that allowed Howie Kendrick to score and give the Angels (38-33) a 1-0 advantage.

Cleveland answered back in the third on a groundout from Michael Bourn in the third, the last run scored in the first nine innings. Both Masterson and Los Angeles starter, C.J. Wilson went seven innings before turning things over to the bullpen.

Pujols’ two-RBI hit came off reliever Scott Atchison with two outs, seemingly giving the Angels the victory. However, Bourn walked to lead off before Jason Kipnis doubled two batters later. After Carlos Santana walked to load the bases, Ernesto Frieri came on to try and finish off the game. Frieri induced a fly out from Daniel Murphy for the second out before Swisher’s slam gave the Indians a 5-3 win.

Kenny Lofton Misses Competition

Kenny Lofton Misses Competition

Rob Carr/ Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Former MLB outfielder Kenny Lofton spent 17 years in the league and still misses the competition after retiring in 2007.

Lofton finished his career with a .299 batting average, 622 stolen bases, and 2,428 hits.

“I love to compete and that’s the tough part,” Lofton told ABC Sports Radio on Friday.  “I’m trying to pick up golf now to try and have some competition with something.”

Lofton played for 12 teams during his 17-year run and made six All-Star teams.

“Coming from a college basketball player to end up playing 17 years in the big leagues, that’s something that I never would have dreamed of,” Lofton said of his biggest accomplishment.

The 47-year-old would jump at the right opportunity to get back into the game he loves in the right coaching situation.

“I would love to,” Lofton said.  “If I have some people who would actually listen, I would want to do something like that.”

“A lot of kids think they know it all and that’s the problem I have,” Lofton continued.  “Coaching and managing would be tough, but as long as you can get some young kids that would listen, I wouldn’t mind doing it.”

Chisenhall Hits Three Homers, Drives in Nine in Indians Win

Chisenhall Hits Three Homers, Drives in Nine in Indians Win

Rick Yeatts/Getty Images(ARLINGTON, Texas) — Lonnie Chisenhall went 5-for-5 with three home runs and tied a team record with nine runs batted in, helping to power the Cleveland Indians to a 17-7 win against Texas.

According to Major League Baseball, it is the first time since RBI was made a statistic in 1920 that a player had that exact state line.

Chisenhall began his historic day with a simple base hit in the first inning that gave the Indians (33-31) a 2-0 lead. He followed it up in the second inning with at two-run blast, upping his personal RBI total to three. Cleveland led 8-1 after two innings, chasing Rangers (31-33) starter Nick Martinez.

In the fourth, Chisenhall belted his second two-run homer of the game to give his squad a 12-4 advantage. He later doubled home a run in the sixth before lacing a three-run shot just inside the right field foul pole for his fifth hit, making it a 17-6 ball game.

“I know a day like today is kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing,” said Chisenhall. “I’m enjoying it as much as I can. I don’t know the history of it, who’s done it in the past.”

Chris James was the only other player in Indians history to drive in nine runs in a single game when he did it on May 4, 1991 in a 20-6 win over Oakland. Chisenhall becomes the first MLB player, and fourth overall, since Fred Lynn in 1975 to get five hits, three homers and nine RBI in a single game.

Walkoff Balk Helps Indians Sweep Tigers

Walkoff Balk Helps Indians Sweep Tigers

Jason Miller/Getty Images(CLEVELAND) –  A long afternoon game between the Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers ended with a walkoff balk.

Al Alburquerque’s bases-loaded balk in the 13th inning Wednesday gave the Indians an 11-10 victory over the Tigers — a win that took 5 hours, 16 minutes to clinch.

Detroit took a 9-7 lead into the ninth inning, but David Murphy hit a game-tying, two-run home run off of Joe Nathan.

Alex Avila gave the Tigers a 10-9 lead with a solo home run in the top of the 13th inning, but the Indians scored twice to cap off a three-game sweep of their division rivals.

Mike Aviles led off the bottom of the 13th inning with a single off of Phil Coke (0-1) and moved to second base on a sacrifice by Michael Bourn. Asdrubal Cabrera was then hit by a pitch. Michael Brantley scored Aviles with an RBI single to bring Cleveland within a run.

Alburquerque relieved Coke and intentionally walked pinch-hitter Yan Gomes to load the bases. Ryan Raburn stepped into the batter’s box next and took the first pitch for a ball. As Alburquerque went into his set position, he appeared to move his leg and glove and then stopped. Cabrera scored to end the game.

“It was definitely a balk,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “If they hadn’t have called it we would have went out there and argued.”

Josh Tomlin (3-1) worked the final three innings in relief for the win. He was the ninth pitcher used for the Indians on the afternoon.
