Rockies’ Outfielder Michael Cuddyer Out 6-8 Weeks with Shoulder Injury

Rockies’ Outfielder Michael Cuddyer Out 6-8 Weeks with Shoulder Injury

Jason Wise/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Another week, another injury for the Colorado Rockies. This time, outfielder Michael Cuddyer lands on the shelf again as he'll miss the next 6-8 weeks with a non-displaced fracture in his left shoulder socket.

Cuddyer suffered the injury last Thursday when diving for a ball at third base.

The team was trying the 35-year-old Cuddyer at third base after Nolan Arenado's injury.

This latest injury will likely keep Cuddyer out of action until August. He's already been on the disabled list this season with a strained left hamstring.

Despite his talent, Cuddyer has struggled to stay healthy during his time with the Rockies. He missed 61 games in 2012, 32 games in 2013, and he's played in just 31 games this season for Colorado.

Last season, Cuddyer won the National League Batting Title after he batted .331 with 20 home runs and 84 RBIs. This season, Cuddyer is batting .317.

Among the other Rockies on the disabled list are Arenado, Carlos Gonzalez and Jordan Lyles.

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(DENVER) -- The Colorado Rockies placed outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday due to inflammation in his left index finger.

In 52 games this season, the 28-year-old Gonzalez is hitting .255 with eight home runs and 31 RBIs. He owns a career .296 batting average with 133 homers and 450 RBIs in 743 Major League games.

To take Gonzalez’s spot on the active roster, the Rockies recalled infielder Ryan Wheeler from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

The 25-year-old Wheeler is batting .253 with three home runs and 16 RBIs in 50 games this year with the Sky Sox.

Arenado Breaks Finger, Will Miss “Some Time”

Arenado Breaks Finger, Will Miss “Some Time”

Scott Cunningham/Getty Images(ATLANTA, Ga.) -- The Colorado Rockies could be without third baseman Nolan Arenado for a significant amount of time. That is after the second year player fractured his left middle finger on a head-first slide into second base Friday night.

"He'll miss some time," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "It's tough news for our club. He's off to a great start and a hell of a player."

Arenado was hitting .305 with six home runs and 28 runs batted in to begin the season. The injury came in the top of the second when he hit a double to left. Arenado dove head first, ahead of the tag from Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons.

Following a review of the play, which was upheld, Arenado grabbed at his left hand but stayed in the game and later scored. He was replaced in the field by Charlie Culberson in the bottom of the second.

Currently, Arenado is listed as day-to-day but could miss 6-8 weeks if he opts to have surgery. The Rockies would end up losing, 3-2, to Atlanta.

Rockies Turn Triple Play, Walk-Off Against San Diego

Rockies Turn Triple Play, Walk-Off Against San Diego

Justin Edmonds/Getty Images(DENVER, Colo.) -- On Sunday afternoon the Colorado Rockies did something that has only been done four times in the last 26 years: turn a triple play and hit a walk-off home run in the same game. Justin Morneau became just the second player during that span to be a part of both as the Rockies defeated San Diego 8-6 in 10 innings.

In the third inning, with runners on first and second, Carlos Quentin grounded to third baseman Nolan Arenado who stepped on the bag for the first out. He then fired to second baseman D.J. LeMahieu for a second out who fired on to Morneau at first. Quentin was called safe by first base umpire Manny Gonzalez, but second base umpire Seth Buckminster ruled that Seth Smith interfered with LeMahieu's throw and ruled Quentin out on baserunner interference.

"That was different than anything I've ever seen," Morneau said of the play.

Smith had homered in the first to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. However, his interference ignited Colorado who ended up scoring four runs in the home half of the third. The Rockies would eventually hold a 6-4 lead heading into the ninth, but closer LaTroy Hawkins gave up a game-tying, two-run homer to Everth Cabrera.

That set the stage for Morneau, who came up with two outs and one on in the bottom of the tenth. Morneau would take Dale Thayer deep to center for the game-winner, joining Milwaukee's Prince Fielder (2009) as the only other player to be involved in a triple play and hit a walk-off home run in the same game since 1988.

It was the first triple play turned by the Rockies since 2007 when shortstop Troy Tulowitzki converted an unassisted triple play against the Atlanta. The last time San Diego hit into a triple play was in 2012 at Los Angeles against the Dodgers.
