Jermaine O’Neal Ends Comeback Attempt

Jermaine O’Neal Ends Comeback Attempt

Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images Sport(DALLAS) -- Despite initial plans to return for a 19th NBA season, veteran forward Jermaine O'Neal will not play this season.

O'Neal was coveted by the Dallas Mavericks among other teams, and despite training to prepare for the grind of the NBA season, O'Neal decided it wasn't the right time to return.

"I don't feel like I'm at that position now with just seven weeks of training, and I'm not comfortable making that commitment at this point," O'Neal wrote in an Instagram post. "The issue for me is timing and things feeling right. I'm a true believer of signs and listening and understanding life."

ESPN reports that the Mavericks are still interested in signing O'Neal if he changes his mind. The Mavericks will also be signing former New York Knicks power forward Amare Stoudemire once or if he clears waivers, ESPN adds.

A former All-Star during his time with the Indiana Pacers from 2000-2008, O'Neal transformed himself into a reliable bench player capable of playing good defense. During his career, O'Neal has averaged 13.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

Report: Stoudemire Joining Mavericks

NBA via New York Knicks(DALLAS, Tx.) -- The Dallas Mavericks are on the brink of signing Amar'e Stoudemire after his recent contract buyout from the New York Knicks.

Stoudemire cleared waivers Monday night and has committed to joining the Mavericks, according to RealGM.com.

After acquiring Rajon Rondo from the Celtics earlier this season, Dallas has been intent on adding size to its front court. The Mavericks were also interested in signing Jermaine O'Neal, who has been rehabbing a knee injury, but the 6'11" O'Neal announced on his Instagram page that he suffered a setback and would not return this season.

Stoudemire, 32 is currently averaging 12 points and 6.8 rebounds in 26 games this season.

Mavericks Point Guard Rajon Rondo Out through the All-Star Break

Mavericks Point Guard Rajon Rondo Out through the All-Star Break

NBA via Boston Celtics(DALLAS) -- The Dallas Mavericks are playing it safe and will hold out point guard Rajon Rondo throughout the All-Star as he recovers from a broken orbital bone in his left eye.

On Friday, the Mavericks announced Rondo will miss the remaining three games before the break so he can further recover from an injury that has kept him out since Jan 31st.

Rondo suffered the injury as well as broken nose when he was inadvertently kneed by teammate Richard Jefferson while getting up after tripping over the leg of Magic point guard Elfrid Payton.

Even though Rondo is not ready to return to the court yet, the team is optimistic he will not need to undergo surgery.

The 28-year-old Rondo was acquired by the Mavericks earlier this season from the Boston Celtics. The former All-Star has averaged 9.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and  6.5 assists per game.

Even though the Mavericks are 34-18 this season, they find themselves only sixth in the Western Conference standings.

Stephen Curry Lights Up Dallas Mavericks

Stephen Curry Lights Up Dallas Mavericks

NBA via Golden State Warriors(OAKLAND, Ca.) -- Stephen Curry had a night for the ages in the Golden State Warriors 128-114 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

Curry put up 51 points, converting 10 three-point shots Wednesday night as he helped rally the Warriors from a 22-point deficit early in the first quarter.

"Sometimes Steph plays his best when we're down big and he just senses that he has to put the Superman cape on," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "And he's so good at it. He loves the freedom of being down and saying, 'All right. I'm going to let it fly and bring us back.' And that's what he did."

At one point Curry was so locked in he converted six straight three-point attempts, spanning the second and third quarters.

"Be aggressive, that's what we do" Curry said. "Shots are going to fall as long as we got defensive stops and kept ourselves in the game, we have enough talent on the team to turn the tides."

The early season inconsistencies that troubled Curry appear to be in the rear-view mirror.  Curry is averaging 30.2 ppg over the team’s last five games and he averaged 23.5 ppg in the month of January.

Celtics Trade forward Brandan Wright to the Suns

Christopher Trotman/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Brandan Wright's tenure with the Boston Celtics lasted just eight games as the team has traded the forward to the Phoenix Suns.

In exchange for Wright, the Suns have sent a protected first-round pick to Boston. he pick is protected within the first 12 selections for the next two seasons and then turns into a pair of second-rounders in 2016 and '17.

Wright was one of the players the Celtics received from the Dallas Mavericks in the Rajon Rondo trade.

"I have known Brandan since he entered the NBA in 2007," Suns president of basketball operations Lon Babby said. "He is a person of the highest character who will fit perfectly into our burgeoning Suns culture. We look forward to welcoming him to Phoenix."

"The way Dallas played last year is somewhat similar to what we play -- being in the open court and pick-and-rolls," Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said.

In 35 games this season for the Celtics and Mavericks, the 27-year-old Wright is averaging 7.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game off the bench.

Nowitzki Moves to 7th on Scoring List in Mavericks Win

NBA via Dallas Mavericks(DALLAS, Tx.) -- With a three-point shot, Dirk Nowitski put away the Brooklyn Nets and passed Moses Malone for seventh on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

Nowitski drained the three with 34.8 seconds left in overtime of Monday Night's 96-88 win over the Nets.

"Yeah, it's been insane, crazy ride in Year No. 17, and Moses was obviously an unbelievable player," Nowitzki said. "So it has been a humbling experience to pass all these all-time greats. It's a tribute to obviously the hard work, but all the great coaches and teammates that have gotten me to this point, and obviously staying healthy is a big part. I am proud of it but I am more proud that we got the win."

Nowitzki passed Hakeem Olajuwon for ninth in November and now trails -- in order -- Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O'Neal.
