Mavericks Rule Out Point Guard Rajon Rondo Indefinitely

Mavericks Rule Out Point Guard Rajon Rondo IndefinitelyNBA via Boston Celtics(DALLAS) -- The Dallas Mavericks are ruling out point guard Rajon Rondo indefinitely because of an injury he sustained Tuesday night against the Rockets, according to the team. When asked Wednesday if he expects Rondo to be in a Mavericks uniform next season, head coach Rick Carlisle replied: "No, I don't." Rondo played only 34 seconds in the second half of Dallas' Game 2 loss, and he was benched by Carlisle after picking up two quick fouls while defending James Harden, as well as a technical. The former All-Star logged just under 10 minutes of court time for the whole game. Rondo hurt his back about a week ago, but the point guard thought he could play through it. He did not inform the Mavericks' trainers of the issue until after he was called for a blocking foul on Harden, which made the injury worse.  "He sustained a back injury basically at the 11-minute mark of the first quarter last night," Carlisle said. "He attempted to take a charge on James Harden, hit the ground and from that point going forward probably should not have played any more, but he did. He wasn't able to play his game or play as well as he can play. Today, it's not good, so he is going to seek additional opinions. That's where things are at with him." Carlisle said that Rondo is not expected to be around the team for the rest of the series as he explores additional medical opinions.  Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. Lakers’ Steve Nash Announces His Retirement from the NBA

Lakers’ Steve Nash Announces His Retirement from the NBA NBA via Los Angeles Lakers(NEW YORK) -- After 19 brilliant seasons in the NBA, Los Angeles Lakers point guard Steve Nash has announced his retirement. The 41-year-old Nash announced his retirement in a letter published on The Player's Tribune website. "The greatest gift has been to be completely immersed in my passion and striving for something I loved so much -- visualizing a ladder, climbing up to my heroes," Nash wrote. "The obsession became my best friend. I talked to her, cherished her, fought with her and got knocked on my ass by her. "And that is what I'm most thankful for in my career. In my entire life, in some ways. Obviously, I value my kids and my family more than the game, but in some ways having this friend -- this ever-present pursuit -- has made me who I am, taught me and tested me, and given me a mission that feels irreplaceable. I am so thankful. I've learned so many invaluable lessons about myself and about life. And of course I still have so much to learn. Another incredible gift." A two-time MVP, Nash has all but punched his ticket to the Hall of Fames as he will go down as one of the greatest point guards in NBA history. Nash retires with career averages of 14.3 points and 8.5 assists per game. His 10,335 assists ranks third all-time in NBA history. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. Jermaine O’Neal Ends Comeback Attempt

Jermaine O’Neal Ends Comeback Attempt Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images Sport(DALLAS) -- Despite initial plans to return for a 19th NBA season, veteran forward Jermaine O'Neal will not play this season. O'Neal was coveted by the Dallas Mavericks among other teams, and despite training to prepare for the grind of the NBA season, O'Neal decided it wasn't the right time to return. "I don't feel like I'm at that position now with just seven weeks of training, and I'm not comfortable making that commitment at this point," O'Neal wrote in an Instagram post. "The issue for me is timing and things feeling right. I'm a true believer of signs and listening and understanding life." ESPN reports that the Mavericks are still interested in signing O'Neal if he changes his mind. The Mavericks will also be signing former New York Knicks power forward Amare Stoudemire once or if he clears waivers, ESPN adds. A former All-Star during his time with the Indiana Pacers from 2000-2008, O'Neal transformed himself into a reliable bench player capable of playing good defense. During his career, O'Neal has averaged 13.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.

Mavericks Point Guard Rajon Rondo Out through the All-Star Break

Mavericks Point Guard Rajon Rondo Out through the All-Star Break NBA via Boston Celtics(DALLAS) -- The Dallas Mavericks are playing it safe and will hold out point guard Rajon Rondo throughout the All-Star as he recovers from a broken orbital bone in his left eye. On Friday, the Mavericks announced Rondo will miss the remaining three games before the break so he can further recover from an injury that has kept him out since Jan 31st. Rondo suffered the injury as well as broken nose when he was inadvertently kneed by teammate Richard Jefferson while getting up after tripping over the leg of Magic point guard Elfrid Payton. Even though Rondo is not ready to return to the court yet, the team is optimistic he will not need to undergo surgery. The 28-year-old Rondo was acquired by the Mavericks earlier this season from the Boston Celtics. The former All-Star has averaged 9.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and  6.5 assists per game. Even though the Mavericks are 34-18 this season, they find themselves only sixth in the Western Conference standings. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.

Stephen Curry Lights Up Dallas Mavericks

Stephen Curry Lights Up Dallas Mavericks NBA via Golden State Warriors(OAKLAND, Ca.) -- Stephen Curry had a night for the ages in the Golden State Warriors 128-114 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Curry put up 51 points, converting 10 three-point shots Wednesday night as he helped rally the Warriors from a 22-point deficit early in the first quarter. "Sometimes Steph plays his best when we're down big and he just senses that he has to put the Superman cape on," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "And he's so good at it. He loves the freedom of being down and saying, 'All right. I'm going to let it fly and bring us back.' And that's what he did." At one point Curry was so locked in he converted six straight three-point attempts, spanning the second and third quarters.  "Be aggressive, that's what we do" Curry said. "Shots are going to fall as long as we got defensive stops and kept ourselves in the game, we have enough talent on the team to turn the tides." The early season inconsistencies that troubled Curry appear to be in the rear-view mirror.  Curry is averaging 30.2 ppg over the team’s last five games and he averaged 23.5 ppg in the month of January.
