Paul Pierce: Nets Would Have ‘Folded’ Without Me and KG

Paul Pierce: Nets Would Have ‘Folded’ Without Me and KG iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- Washington Wizards forward Paul Pierce leveled some harsh criticisms toward the Brooklyn Nets and their star point guard Deron Williams in a recent interview with ESPN.com's Jackie MacMullen. After being traded by the Celtics to the Nets, Pierce characterized his time in Brooklyn as "horrible." "It was just the guys' attitudes there. It wasn't like we were surrounded by a bunch of young guys," he said. "They were vets who didn't want to play and didn't want to practice. I was looking around saying, 'What's this?' Kevin [Garnett] and I had to pick them up every day in practice." "If me and Kevin weren't there, that team would have folded up. That team would have packed it in. We kept them going each and every day," he continued.  The player that drew the most attention from Pierce was Williams. "Before I got there, I looked at Deron as an MVP candidate,'' Pierce said. "But I felt once we got there, that's not what he wanted to be. He just didn't want that. I think a lot of the pressure got to him sometimes. This was his first time in the national spotlight. The media in Utah is not the same as the media in New York, so that can wear on some people. I think it really affected him.'' Brooklyn traded its 2014 first round pick, as well as 2016 and 2018 picks to acquire Pierce, Garnett and Jason Terry. The Nets lost in the second round of the playoffs to the Miami Heat. Nets Will Continue to Bring Deron Williams and Brook Lopez Off the Bench

Nets Will Continue to Bring Deron Williams and Brook Lopez Off the Bench Bruce Bennett/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Brooklyn Nets are playing better of late with high-priced players Deron Williams and Brook Lopez coming off the bench, so that's where they'll stay for now according to head coach Lionel Hollins. Williams is making $19.75 million this season but has been used sparingly since returning from injury a few games ago. He played just 17 minutes in the team's win over the Sacramento Kings on Monday night. Lopez, who is making $15.7 million this season, also has seen his minutes drastically reduced recently. He's averaged just over 12 minutes per game the past four contests. According to Hollins, this is a trend that Nets fans may want to get used to seeing. “Why you keep asking about Deron and Brook? This is the Brooklyn Nets,” Hollins told the New York Daily News. “Yes, they were starters, they’ve been out and if you note, while they were out we started playing better and winning, so why would I go back and change the lineup now?” At 14-16, the Nets currently hold the 7th seed in the Eastern Conference. Nets Guard Deron Williams to Undergo Surgery on Both Ankles

Nets Guard Deron Williams to Undergo Surgery on Both Ankles NBA via Brooklyn Nets(NEW YORK) -- Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams will undergo surgery on both ankles next week, the team announced Thursday. "He will have a bone chip removed from his right ankle, and the left ankle will have an arthroscopic cleanout with removal of spurs from both the front and back of the ankle," team foot and ankle specialist Dr. Martin O'Malley, who will perform the surgery, said in a statement issued by the team. For the past two seasons, Williams has been plagued by persistent injuries in both of his ankles. He has received multiple cortisone shots and platelet-rich-plasma injections to help ease the pain, but the problem has not gone away. Williams averaged just 14.3 points and 6.1 assists in 64 games during the regular season for the Nets, the lowest totals since his rookie year. In 12 playoff games, he averaged 14.5 points and 5.8 assists.  The Nets were eliminated by the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The procedures are scheduled for next Tuesday. The 29-year-old Williams still has three years and $63.1 million remaining on his deal with the Nets. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio
