Verlander Diagnosed with Shoulder Inflammation

Verlander Diagnosed with Shoulder Inflammation

Robert Rogers/MLB Photos via Getty Images (PITTSBURGH) -- Detroit Tigers starting pitcher, Justin Verlander, had an MRI Tuesday that revealed the former Cy Young Award winner has inflammation in his right shoulder but no major structural damage.

"Really, there was no major structural damage," Tigers skipper Brad Ausmus said. "At this point, we don't expect him to go on the DL. We're still kind of evaluating what the treatment options are, but there's a possibility he may only have to miss a start and be back with us." While it's a relief to the Tigers that Verlander hasn't suffered a major injury, it's still questionable whether he will make his scheduled start Sunday against the Mariners. Verlander felt discomfort in his shoulder while pitching against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the team's 11-6 loss Monday night. He lasted only one inning, allowing four earned runs, before being pulled. The 31-year-old Verlander is having a tough season. The former American League MVP has pitched 158 2/3 innings this season, compiling a 10-11 record, 4.76 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 55 walks and 118 strikeouts.

Ausmus told MLB.com that he does not expect Verlander to go on the DL.

Royals Take AL Central Lead with Win

Royals Take AL Central Lead with Win

Rich Pilling/MLB Photos via Getty Images(KANSAS CITY, Mo.) -- Just over a week ago, Kansas City was five games behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central. Now, the Royals (64-53) won their eighth straight on Monday and overtook the Tigers in the division race with a 3-2 win over Oakland.

Kansas City jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two innings, but Brandon Moss singled home a pair of runs for the Athletics (72-46) in the third to tie the game.

It remained deadlocked until Alcides Escobar singled in a run in the seventh, giving the Royals a 3-2 advantage.

Yordany Ventura out dueled Sonny Gray by allowing two runs on two hits over six innings. Gray went seven strong, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out a pair.

Kansas City was able to gain the top spot in the AL Central when Pittsburgh defeated Detroit 11-3. It marks the latest point in the season since 2003 that the Royals have been in first place.

"You want to be in first place. Our goal was to get back to first place," said Royals manager Ned Yost, who has won eight games in a row. "Now our goal is to stay in first place."

Blue Jays Win MLB’s Second-Straight 19-Inning Game

Blue Jays Win MLB’s Second-Straight 19-Inning Game

Robert Rogers/MLB Photos via Getty Images(TORONTO) -- One day after the Los Angeles Angels beat the Boston Red Sox in 19 innings, the Toronto Blue Jays got a walk-off single from Jose Bautista in the bottom of the 19th to down Detroit, 6-5 on Sunday. It is the first time in MLB history that two 19 inning games have been played on consecutive days.

The 6-hour, 37-minute marathon saw the Blue Jays (63-56) comeback from an early 5-0 deficit to earn a series win over the Tigers (63-52). Detroit jumped on starting pitcher Mark Buerhle, knocking him out of the game in the fourth after Ian Kinsler's ground rule double drove in Austin Romine for the fifth run of the day.

Toronto's bullpen then took over and held off the Tigers long enough for the comeback. Dioner Navarro opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth before Jose Reyes and Melky Cabrera hit consecutive singles in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-4.

Reyes added another RBI in the ninth, scoring Anthony Gose to tie the game and send it into extra innings. Both teams' bullpens were able to work in and out of trouble in the 12 extra frames before Munenori Kawasaki started the 19th with a single.

Reyes then reached after Ian Kinsler couldn't handle a throw from pitcher Rick Porcello on a bunt attempt. Cabrera was then intentionally walked to load the bases with nobody out, setting up Bautista's heroics. It is only the second walk-off hit of Bautista's career.

Tigers Place Sanchez, Soria on 15-Day DL

iStockphoto(DETROIT) -- The Detroit Tigers placed stating pitcher Anibal Sanchez and right-handed reliever Joakim Soria on the 15-day disabled list Sunday. Sanchez is dealing with a right pectoralis major strain while Soria is out with a left oblique strain.

Sanchez suffered the injury in the fifth inning during Friday night’s 5-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. In 21 starts this season, he is 8-5 with a 3.53 ERA.

Soria left Saturday’s game while warming up in the 10th inning. He is 2-4 on the season with a 3.58 ERA and 17 saves. The Tigers acquired the former closer in a trade with the Texas Rangers on July 23 for right-handed pitchers Jake Thompson and Corey Knebel.

Rangers Trade Closer Joakim Soria to the Tigers

Rangers Trade Closer Joakim Soria to the Tigers

Ed Zurga/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The back end of the Detroit Tigers bull pen just got a whole lot stronger as the team has acquired closer Joakim Soria from the Texas Rangers.

"I'm going to a new team, and that's going to be my new family and I will do whatever they want me to do," Soria said of the Tigers. "I want to help them win the World Series -- that's what this is all about -- and I hope to help them out as much as I can."

Despite the recent trade, Tigers closer Joe Nathan is expected to remain the team's closer, for now. After a hot start to the season, Nathan has struggled mightily recently. He has 20 saves this season, but also has a bloated ERA of 5.89 and has blown five saves.

Soria may not have been the dominant closer he was while he was a member of the Kansas City Royals, but he's still an above-average reliever who is capable of closing out games. In 35 games this season, Soria is 1-3 with a 2.70 ERA with 17 saves.

Indians Sweep Detroit in Doubleheader

Indians Sweep Detroit in Doubleheader

Jason Miller/Getty Images(DETROIT) -- The Cleveland Indians swept a doubleheader in Detroit on Saturday, closing to within 4 1/2 games of the division leading Tigers. The Indians (50-47) opened the day with a 6-2 win before downing Detroit (53-41) 5-2 in the nightcap.

Game One's story was the impressive pitching performance of Corey Kluber. The righty pitched into the ninth inning, striking out 10 batters. He came within one out of his second complete game before Bryan Shaw relieved him to finish things out.

The big offensive blow came in the fifth inning with three run-scoring hits to put Cleveland up 3-0. Another run came across in the sixth before the Indians tacked on two more in the ninth.

Game Two was not so easy for the Indians, taking a tied game into the final inning of regulation. Chris Dickerson hit a pair of solo home runs to put Cleveland up 2-1 after six frames before Austin Jackson's RBI triple in the seventh tied things up.

The Indians then loaded the bases in the top of the ninth against Joe Nathan. Carlos Santana took advantage with a bases clearing double to right-center. Cody Allen finished things off in the bottom half for his 13th save.
