Scherzer Gets First Complete Game Shutout in Tigers Win

Scherzer Gets First Complete Game Shutout in Tigers Win

David Banks/Getty Images(CHICAGO, Ill.) -- In baseball's modern era (since 1900), no starting pitcher had gone longer than Detroit's Max Scherzer before tossing their first complete game. On Thursday night that drought ended as the righty struck out eight batters and scattered three hits in a 4-0 win over the White Sox.

"I was finally able to go nine and finish the deal, so it's good feeling," said Scherzer, who made his 179th career start on Thursday.

The Tigers (34-28) provided enough offense for the 2013 Cy Young winner. Victor Martinez put Detroit on top 1-0 in the fifth inning with his 16th home run of the season. Miguel Cabrera later drove in two runs with an infield single in the eighth before Bryan Holaday singled in another run.

It was billed as a matchup of aces with Scherzer dueling opposite Chicago's Chris Sale. Despite 10 strike outs from the White Sox (33-34) starter, his offense could do nothing against Scherzer.

"I was surprised when I found out that he had no complete games," said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. "But he wanted this one for sure. He was on his game tonight."

Scherzer turned in a much needed effort, giving up 20 runs in his last four starts. The six-year hurler tossed nine innings on other time in his career, a ten inning 2-1 loss to Minnesota in 2010.

Ortiz Homer Lifts Red Sox Past Tigers

Ortiz Homer Lifts Red Sox Past Tigers

Duane Burleson/Getty Images(DETROIT, Mich.) -- David Ortiz launched a three-run home run to right field in the top of the ninth as the Boston Red Sox came from behind to defeat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 on Sunday night. The win snapped a five game losing streak for Boston (28-34), and was the team's first win against Detroit (33-26) this season.

The Red Sox took the initial lead on a Dustin Pedroia sacrifice fly in the third before Detroit answered with runs in the third and fourth innings. Victor Martinez doubled home Miguel Cabrera to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage in the fourth.

Both starting pitchers were able to keep their team in the game as it approached the late innings. Detroit's Anibal Sanchez went six innings before turning things over to the bullpen while John Lackey (7-4) tossed eight frames allowing just two earned runs.

After Mike Napoli homered in his return from the disabled list to tie things up, Eugenio Suarez laced his second RBI single of the night to left to give Detroit a 3-2 lead after eight innings. Boston had a chance to take the lead in the seventh when Brock Holt tripled to begin the inning, however Phil Coke was able to reitre the side, including inducing a deep flyout off the bat of Ortiz.

Joba Chamberlain (1-3) pitched the ninth in favor of struggling closer Joe Nathan, who threw 32 pitches the previous night. Holt again started the rally with a leadoff single before Pedroia worked a one out walk. Then, with Napoli looming on-deck, Ortiz blasted his 14th homer of the year, giving Boston the lead. Koji Uehara threw a perfect bottom of the ninth to earn his 12th save of the season.

Walkoff Balk Helps Indians Sweep Tigers

Walkoff Balk Helps Indians Sweep Tigers

Jason Miller/Getty Images(CLEVELAND) --  A long afternoon game between the Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers ended with a walkoff balk.

Al Alburquerque's bases-loaded balk in the 13th inning Wednesday gave the Indians an 11-10 victory over the Tigers -- a win that took 5 hours, 16 minutes to clinch.

Detroit took a 9-7 lead into the ninth inning, but David Murphy hit a game-tying, two-run home run off of Joe Nathan.

Alex Avila gave the Tigers a 10-9 lead with a solo home run in the top of the 13th inning, but the Indians scored twice to cap off a three-game sweep of their division rivals.

Mike Aviles led off the bottom of the 13th inning with a single off of Phil Coke (0-1) and moved to second base on a sacrifice by Michael Bourn. Asdrubal Cabrera was then hit by a pitch. Michael Brantley scored Aviles with an RBI single to bring Cleveland within a run.

Alburquerque relieved Coke and intentionally walked pinch-hitter Yan Gomes to load the bases. Ryan Raburn stepped into the batter's box next and took the first pitch for a ball. As Alburquerque went into his set position, he appeared to move his leg and glove and then stopped. Cabrera scored to end the game.

"It was definitely a balk," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "If they hadn't have called it we would have went out there and argued."

Josh Tomlin (3-1) worked the final three innings in relief for the win. He was the ninth pitcher used for the Indians on the afternoon.

Tigers Sweep Defending Champs in Boston

Tigers Sweep Defending Champs in Boston

Jim Rogash/Getty Images(BOSTON, Mass.) -- In a rematch of the 2013 American League Championship Series, the outcome was decidedly different. With a 6-2 win on Sunday night, the Detroit Tigers won their sixth straight game and swept the defending champion Boston Red Sox.

The last time these two teams met, Boston completed an improbable Game 6 comeback to eventually move on and win their third World Series title in the last decade. Thanks to an impressive offensive performance, the Tigers got a small stroke of revenge and earned their first sweep at Fenway Park since 1983.

Boston took an early 1-0 lead on a Xander Bogaerts' RBI single in the second inning. The lead did not last long as Detroit scored three times in the third. Miguel Cabrera knotted the score with an RBI single before Victor Martinez launched his tenth home run of the season, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

Detroit owns the best record in the majors at 27-12 and has now won 11 consecutive games on the road and 15 of their last 18 overall.

"It really comes down to the starting pitching and the bullpen," said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. "The starters have set the tempo and got us deep into the game. We've also got some big hits. Miggy and Victor have been hitting well all season long."

That same blueprint led to success on Sunday night. Anibal Sanchez (1-2), returning from a brief stint on the disabled list, went five innings allowing just two runs on five hits. Meanwhile, Tigers hitters roughed up Jake Peavy (1-2), scoring five runs and totalling 11 hits against the Red Sox (20-23) starter.

Ian Kinsler had four hits while Cabrera and Martinez each drove in a pair of runs.  Tori Hunter added a solo shot in the seventh, increasing the lead to 6-2.
