Josh Hamilton’s Future with the Angels in Doubt

Josh Hamilton’s Future with the Angels in Doubt Ronald Martinez/Getty Images(ANAHEIM, Calif.) -- Even though Major League Baseball will not discipline outfielder Josh Hamilton for his latest relapse into substance abuse, his future with the club is cloudy at best. Angels' owner Arte Moreno stated that Hamilton's contract contains certain language that protects the team against a relapse by Hamilton. According to the player's union, no such language exists. "To the contrary, the collectively bargained provisions of the [Joint Drug Agreement] and the Basic Agreement supersede all other player contract provisions and explicitly prevent clubs from exactly the type of action Mr. Moreno alluded to,'' the MLBPA said in a statement. Reporters asked Moreno on Friday night whether Hamilton definitely would play again for the team. Moreno's response was "I will not say that.'' Hamilton has three years left on his current contract that will pay him $83 million. "It's not about money," Moreno said. "Nothing about money." The former American League MVP has battled addiction going back to his time with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He overcame his dependency to become one of baseball best hitters, but he hasn't produced during his time in Los Angels and his latest relapse has his playing career in doubt. Angels Prez Says Hamilton Non-Suspension “Defies Logic”

Angels Prez Says Hamilton Non-Suspension “Defies Logic” Ronald Martinez/Getty Images(ANAHEIM, Ca.) -- An independent arbitrator has ruled that Los Angeles Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton cannot be suspended by Major League Baseball after his latest relapse with cocaine and alcohol. MLB said in a statement it "will seek to address deficiencies in the manner in which drugs of abuse are addressed under the program in the collective-bargaining process." The Angels released a statement after the ruling, saying they will support Hamilton: “The Angels have serious concerns about Josh’s conduct, health and behavior and we are disappointed that he has broken an important commitment which he made to himself, his family, his teammates and our fans. We are going to do everything possible to assure he receives proper help for himself and for the well-being of his family Afterwards, Angel's team president John Carpino and general manager Jerry Dipoto agreed with MLB and announced they were disappointed in the ruling of the arbitrator. "It defies logic that Josh's reported behavior is not a violation of his drug program," Carpino said Friday. Hamilton will start the season on the disabled list as he rehabs from offseason shoulder surgery. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.

Angels Say Josh Hamilton Facing Discipline from MLB

Angels Say Josh Hamilton Facing Discipline from MLB Ronald Martinez/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Los Angeles Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton was scheduled to meet with MLB officials on Wednesday in regards to a disciplinary issue. Hamilton is expected to be out until May due to a recent shoulder surgery and he has not participated in the team's spring training in Arizona.  He's also been advised to stay at a friend's house in Houston while rehabbing from the surgery. Hamilton was suspended from February 2004 to June 2006 due to issues related with cocaine and alcohol addiction.  He also had alcohol relapses in 2009 and 2012, but bounced back, leading the Rangers to back-to-back World Series appearances -- and he won the AL MVP award in 2010. Hamilton signed a five-year deal with the Angels prior to the 2013 season. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.

Angels’ Josh Hamilton Could Miss More Time than Expected

Angels’ Josh Hamilton Could Miss More Time than Expected Ronald Martinez/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- After originally being expected to miss six to eight weeks after undergoing shoulder surgery, it turns out that Los Angeles Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton could miss even more time than previously thought. "It could be six to eight weeks, it could be as much as 12 weeks," Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto told The Los Angeles Times. "He had a bone shaved down to create less friction in an arthritic shoulder. Until he gets on site and on the field, it's tough to determine how long it will take." Prior to the start of the 2013 season, Hamilton signed a five-year, $125-million contract with the team. Despite the lofty contract, he has yet to live up to the deal. "Surgery is always complicated," Manager Mike Scioscia told the paper. "We have to take it one step at a time and make sure he's ready to go before we start to project when he can do some of the things he used to do." The 33-year-old Hamilton played in just 89 games last year and batted .263 with 10 home runs and 44 RBIs. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.

Hamilton signed a 5-year, $125 million contract with the Angels in 2013. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright © 2015, ABC Radio. All rights reserved.

Angels Power Past Oakland, Regain MLB’s Best Record

Angels Power Past Oakland, Regain MLB’s Best Record Ronald Martinez/Getty Images(OAKLAND, Calif.) -- The two days off for Josh Hamilton have proven to be a perfect remedy for the former slumping slugger. Hamilton drove in three runs, including his 10th home run of the year, on Sunday night as the Los Angeles Angels defeated Oakland 9-4 to regain the best record in baseball. The Angels (77-52) also took back the top spot in the American League West division with the victory. Los Angeles also got a sixth inning homer from Mike Trout, which opened up a 9-0 lead on the Athletics (76-53). That proved to be more than enough offense for starting pitcher Jered Weaver (14-7) as the righty struck out eight in six and two-thirds innings. "It's nice to end the series on top of the AL West division," Weaver said. "This was obviously a huge game. We didn't want to get swept, and the offense was the story of the game." Los Angeles opened the scoring in the second, plating three runs off Scott Kazmir (14-6) before Hamilton's two-run blast in the third made it a 5-0 lead. Hamilton brought home another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, effectively ending Kazmir's night.  Oakland did attempt a comeback late, getting home runs from Alberto Callaspo and Andy Parrino in the seventh to make it a 9-3 deficit. The Athletics added another in the ninth, but Jason Grilli struck out the final two batters of the night. Follow @ABCNewsRadio Copyright 2014 ABC News Radio
