Mets Lose Wheeler to Tommy John Surgery

Mets Lose Wheeler to Tommy John Surgery

Major League Baseball(NEW YORK) -- For the second straight season, the New York Mets will be without one of their top pitchers.

Zach Wheeler has been diagnosed with a full tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, and will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair it.

Last season, the Mets were without ace Matt Harvey as he also recovered from Tommy John surgery.

"Obviously we wish the best for him," Harvey said. "We're all going to be behind him. Obviously being pretty recently through that process, anything he needs, we're going to always be there and help him out. It's an unfortunate thing. He wants to be playing just as bad as the next guy. It's a tough day for all of us."

The team also lost left-handed reliever Josh Edgin to the same surgery on Sunday.

The Mets will lean on Dillon Gee, who started 22 games last season for New York, in place of the injured Wheeler.

Matt Harvey’s Flawless in First Start Since Tommy John Surgery

Matt Harvey’s Flawless in First Start Since Tommy John Surgery

Norm Hall/Getty Images(PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.) -- New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey was dominant in his first start on Friday at spring training against the Tigers.

Harvey threw 25 pitches and struck out three in two scoreless innings of work.

"The big thing is I was happy throwing strikes and not walking anybody. Those are the things you try to work on," Harvey said. "Especially hearing things about guys going through this process and having tough command, for me, that was the big thing that I was focusing on today. And I was pretty happy about it."

Harvey understands that the challenge is building up his arm for six to seven innings of work by the end of spring training, but joked about pitching another frame on Friday.

"I was joking with [Mets manager Terry Collins] a little bit because I know at some point we're probably going to have some innings limits," Harvey said. "I asked him if I could go out for a couple of more innings, and that was laughed about. Obviously, we both know that's going to happen at some point. So giving him a little chuckle about wanting to go back out was my way of saying I understand the process and I know how things are going to go."

The Mets Won’t Push Back Matt Harvey’s Season Debut

The Mets Won’t Push Back Matt Harvey’s Season Debut

Norm Hall/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Back in December, Mets manager Terry Collins said ace starting pitcher Matt Harvey might not make his debut until the team's home opener on April 13th, but it looks as if plans may change.

According to ESPN New York's Adam Rubin, Collins said that the current plan for Harvey is to start one of the team's first five games.  Harvey was expected to be on an innings limit this season after undergoing Tommy John Surgery last year, however, Collins says they are more inclined to give him five-inning starts instead of skipping his turn in the rotation.

Harvey will look to regain 2013 form in 2015, where he went 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA, striking out 191 batters in 178.1 innings pitched.

Mets’ Matt Harvey Ready to Pick up Where He Left Off in 2013

Mets’ Matt Harvey Ready to Pick up Where He Left Off in 2013

Norm Hall/Getty Images(PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.) -- It may be cold in New York, but the sight of starting pitcher Matt Harvey reporting for spring training has likely warmed the hearts of New York Mets fans.

After taking the baseball world by storm in 2013, Harvey needed to undergo Tommy John Surgery, and missed the entire 2014 season. After a full offseason of working out and getting into shape, Harvey is ready to go.

"Just the way the ball's coming out, I'm pretty on point with my accuracy right now, which is surprising," he said. "Obviously hearing from guys [who came back from Tommy John surgery], that was kind of the last thing that sometimes comes. I couldn't be happier with the way things feel."

In 2013, Harvey went 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA with 191 strikeouts in 178.1 innings pitched while making 26 starts.

According to Harvey, he'll be ready to go for the team's first game against the Washington Nationals on April 6, but will likely make his first start on April 13 for the team's home opener against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Mets’ Matt Harvey Looking Forward to Spring Training

Mets’ Matt Harvey Looking Forward to Spring Training

Norm Hall/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey is ready to get back to work after missing all of last season due to Tommy John surgery.

Harvey said he plans to report early to spring training in February.

"I'm healthy," Harvey said on Wednesday.  "It's nice to have a normal offseason and prepare like a normal offseason and get ready for spring training."

"It's been great," Harvey continued.  "I've been at it for over a month now.  We're getting excited.  I think spring training can't come quick enough for me."

Harvey is "completely on board" with his innings at Citi Field being limited in hopes that he can pitch late into October 2015.

"I just want to be healthy," Harvey said. "I think after missing a whole year, coming back and just being able to pitch every five days is something I'm looking forward to."

Harvey said he has faith that the pitching staff will be one of the best in the MLB next season.

"The staff is going to be very solid," Harvey said.  "I think the pieces that we've added; winning in New York and bringing a parade back to Queens would be exactly what we want to do."

Terry Collins Wants Matt Harvey to Back Off His Rehab

Terry Collins Wants Matt Harvey to Back Off His Rehab

Norm Hall/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- New York Mets manager Terry Collins doesn't want rehabbing pitcher Matt Harvey to overdo it as he continues to come back from Tommy John surgery.

Harvey is the key to the Mets pitching staff moving into 2015 as the team continues to work towards their goal of getting back into the playoffs.

"No. 1, he's a tremendous competitor," Collins said. "That being said, he's a bulldog at the same time. There's no backing down with Matt Harvey -- for anything. He was bound and determined to get ready. We slowed him down. It frustrated him to the max. He's feeling good."

Harvey has continuously said that he wants to pitch by the end of the season, but Collins believes he shouldn't do anything to ruin 2015.

"He wants to try to get back here to help," Collins said about Harvey. "And I explained to him, 'I understand that. But...you have got to understand the big picture. And the big picture is 2015. So back off.' ...Now, does he get it? You'd have to ask him. I mean, I can't answer that for him. I just trust him. I just trust him that he gets it. So we'll see."

Mets’ Matt Harvey Concedes He Likely Won’t Pitch this Season

Mets’ Matt Harvey Concedes He Likely Won’t Pitch this Season

Norm Hall/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- After a breakout 2013 campaign that was cut short because of Tommy John surgery, New York Mets starting pitcher Matt Harvey will likely not pitch during the 2014 season.

The Cy Young candidate expected to come back late this season, but he realizes it likely won't happen.

"I’m always going to be on board with what they have to say," Harvey said. "I can only do so much, and speak my two cents. As a competitor, I’m always going to want to get out there, but I can’t write myself out there and set up my own program, so whatever they have set up is obviously the way we’re going to go."

Harvey made 26 starts for the Mets last season and emerged as one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. He wound up going 12-10 with a 2.39 ERA. He also struck out 191 batters in 178.1 innings pitched.
