(3) Florida State Thwarts Miami’s Upset Bid

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images(MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.) -- For the third time in its last four games Florida State found itself down at halftime, and as it did every other time, FSU won.

Dalvin Cook ran for a 26-yard touchdown with 3:05 remaining in the game, giving FSU its first lead of the contest and the No. 3 Seminoles held on from there as they avoid the upset and beat rival Miami, 30-26 Saturday night.

"They love each other and it gets down to that," Florida State head coach Jeff Fisher said. "They play for each other. They don't panic. This is a heck of a Miami football team. Give them credit ... but our kids just execute when they have to."

Miami (6-4, 3-3 ACC) came to play. It scored twice in the first quarter and got a field goal early in the second quarter to put them up 16-0 before Florida State did anything. The Seminoles would end up scoring on a 44-yard run by Cook but the Hurricanes answered right back when true freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya threw a 61-yard touchdown to Clive Walford. Roberto Aguayo would hit the first of his three field goals before the end of the quarter to go into halftime with Miami up by 13.

The second half was a different story.

This time it was Florida State (10-0, 7-0 ACC) that played the aggressor outscoring the Hurricanes 20-3 in route to its 26th-straight victory.

Miami was still alive with 39 seconds to play. It had the ball on the Florida State 43 but Kaaya's pass was intercepted by Jalen Ramsey to seal the Seminoles fifth-straight win over the Hurricanes.

Florida State will try to keep its undefeated record intact next Saturday when it hosts Boston College (6-4, 3-3 ACC).

Louisville Dominant in Petrino’s Return

Louisville Dominant in Petrino’s Return

iStockphoto(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) -- The Louisville Cardinals (1-0) defense held Miami to 1-for-13 on three downs, helping lead the team to a 31-13 win over the Hurricanes on Monday in their season opener.

It was also the first victory for head coach Bobby Petrino in his return to Louisville.

"I thought it would be a real battle and we would have to work extremely hard," said Petrino. "Obviously, we made some mistakes on offense and on special teams. I thought the defense really did a great job all night long, especially on third down."

The Cardinals opened the scoring in the first quarter when Will Gardner hit Charles Standberry on a two yard touchdown pass. The Hurricanes countered with 10 straight points before Louisville regained the lead just prior to halftime when Corvin Lamb went 97 yards on a kickoff return.

Coming out of the locker room it was all Louisville as they scored 17 straight points after Miami closed the gap to 14-13 just four minutes into the third.

The game also saw a pair of quarterbacks making their first career starts. Gardner was 20-for-28 passing for 206 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Freshman Brad Kaaya did not fare as well for Miami (0-1), tossing a pair of interceptions and going just 17-for-29 in his debut.

"We did not do a good enough job protecting a first-start quarterback. Period," said Hurricanes coach Al Golden.

Louisville opened their tenure in the Atlantic Coast Conference, dominating a mainstay program in the ACC. Petrino led the Cardinals to a 41-9 record from 2003-06 as head coach.
