Marlins Sign Infielder Miguel Tejada to Minor League Deal

Marlins Sign Infielder Miguel Tejada to Minor League Deal

David Banks/Getty Images(MIAMI) — Even though he’s currently serving a suspension, the Miami Marlins have signed infielder Miguel Tejada to a minor league deal.
The 39-year-old Tejada is currently serving a 105-game suspension that he began last year for testing positive for an amphetamine. It is his second second positive test for a performance enhancing drug.
Tejada will be eligible to make his debut with the team in their 65th game this season. As long as they have no games postponed, he’ll be able to suit up June 10 against the Texas Rangers. He will be allowed to partake in minor league games at the Double-A level or lower on May 31.
As a member of the Kansas City Royals, Tejada received one of the longest suspensions ever handed out by Major League Baseball.
Tejada is a six-time All-Star and was the American League MVP back in 2002.
In 16 Major League seasons, Tejada has batted .285 with 307 home runs and driven in 1,302 runs.

ESPN: Miguel Tejada Inks Minor League Deal with Marlins

David Banks/Getty Images(NEW YORK) –  Miguel Tejada has signed a minor league contract with the Miami Marlins, the slugger confirmed to ESPN on Saturday.
The 39-year-old Tejada will immediately report to the team’s spring training headquarters in Jupiter, Florida.  Tejada says the deal is subject to a physical, which will be completed before his first workout.
“I’m in great shape, I’ve been training every day for months,” Tejada said. “I feel that I can still help a team. I will work hard to achieve game shape, and then to earn a promotion to the big club.”
Tejada is in the midst of serving a 105-game suspension that Major League Baseball imposed on him last season. Tejada was suspended after testing positive for an amphetamine in violation of MLB’s drug program while playing for the Kansas City Royals.
Tejada hit .288 with three homers and 20 RBIs in 53 games and was on the Royals’ disabled list when he was suspended for the final 41 games of the season. The punishment also included the first 64 games of the 2014 season.  He will be eligible to return to the majors after May 31.
The six-time All-Star has hit 306 home runs and driven in 1,302 runs during his 16-year MLB career.  He won the American League MVP trophy in 2002 while playing for the Oakland Athletics.

Jose Fernandez to Have Tommy John Surgery

Jose Fernandez to Have Tommy John Surgery

Denis Poroy/Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.) — What was feared true has now become fact. Miami Marlins ace pitcher Jose Fernandez will have season-ending Tommy John surgery on Friday.
The announcement came prior to Miami’s game at San Francisco by manager Mike Redmond. “Our focus is to get him back,” he added. “I’m glad he’s having it done and starting his recovery process. Obviously it’s a big blow for us.”
Fernandez is expected to miss 12 to 18 months following the procedure.
The 21-year-old was put on the disabled list last week after struggling in an outing against San Diego.
The Marlins’ righty was 4-2 on the season with a 2.44 earned run average in eight starts. Fernandez led the league with 70 strikeouts after winning the National League’s Rookie of the Year award in 2013.

Jim Rogash/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Randy Wolf is back in the major leagues, as he’s come to an agreement on a one-year contract with the Miami Marlins, according to ESPN.
Wolf is expected to be slotted into the rotation now that staff ace Jose Fernandez is scheduled to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery.
The 38-year-old Wolf hasn’t pitched in the majors in nearly 19 months after he himself underwent Tommy John surgery while a member of the Baltimore Orioles. He hasn’t pitched in a major league game since 2012.
As he recovered from surgery, Wolf pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Triple-A affiliate in Reno, Nevada, but he opted out of his contract.
